I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards The learner demonstrates understanding of pie graphs and experimental
probability.
B. Performance Standards The learner is able to create and interpret representations of data (tables and pie
graphs) and apply experimental probability in mathematical problems and real-
life situations.
C. Most Essential Learning The learner…
Competencies -describes the meaning of probability such as 50% chance of rain and one in a
million chance of winning.
-quantifies the phrases “impossible to happen, unlikely to happen, as likely as
unlikely to happen, likely to happen, certain to happen”.
II. CONTENT Describing Probability & Quantifying Phrases
III. LEARNING
RESOURCES
A. References K to 12 MELCS p. 302
B. Other Learning Mathematics Lesson Guide p. 347-349
Resources
C. Materials Charts, laptop, PowerPoint presentation, activity cards, activity sheets
IV. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing previous Drill:
lesson or presenting the Direction: Write a ratio of the following in 3 ways.
new lesson word colon fraction
1. 4 wins to 2 loses in a
basketball game
2. 3 months to 8 weeks
3. 30 seconds to 6 minutes
4. 24 girls to 18 boys
5. 8 melons to 36 fruits
B. Establishing a purpose Show a picture of a father and son playing chess.
of the lesson Ask: What can you see in the picture?
C. Presenting Do you know that a chessboard is made up of 64 squares; 32 dark squares
examples/instances of and 32 light squares. The squares horizontally are called ranks. The squares
the new lesson vertically are called files.
Ask:
-How many squares are there in a chessboard?
-What do you call the squares horizontally?
-What do you call the squares vertically?
-How many “a” squares are there in a chessboard?
-Do you know the possible outcomes and descriptions of probability of “a”
squares in a chessboard?
D. Discussing new concepts Present a video about probability.
and practicing new skills Ask:
#1 What is probability?
Look at the line segment.
_____________________________________________________________________________
0 1/4 1/2 3/4 1
0% 25% 50% 75% 100%

The value of probability starts with 0 to 1.

It may be given in fraction, decimal or percent.
0 or 0% in probability means impossible to happen.
While 1 or 100% means certain to happen.
While ½ or 50 % means as likely as unlikely to happen.
Between 0 to ½ or .25 or 25% means unlikely to happen.
Between ½ to 1 or .75 or .75% means likely to happen.
E. Discussing new concepts Let us go back with the chessboard.
and practicing new skills Let us now answer question #5.
#2 -Do you know the possible outcomes and descriptions of probability of “a”
squares in a chessboard?

F. Developing mastery of Direction:

the lesson Observe the black pieces, and then complete the table. Write and describe the
probability of choosing of each object.
Outcomes Probability of Description of
Black pieces outcomes probability
1. King
2. Queen
3. Bishop
4. Pawn
5. Joker
G. Finding practical Group activity:
applications of concepts Group 1: Observe the contents in the box. Then, complete the table. Write
and skills in daily living and describe the probability of choosing each objects.
Outcomes Probability of Description of
outcomes probability
1. Triangle
2. Cylinder
3. Heart
4. Circle
5. Smiley

Group 2: Answer the following. For #1-5, use the terms from the text box.
Correctly place them on the probability line segment.

________________________________________________________________________________

0 50% 1 impossible to happen ½

¼ 0.25 certain to happen 100% ¾
Unlikely to happen likely to happen as likely as unlikely
0.50 0.75 75% 25 %

Group 3: Find the probability of the illustration.

a. 1 blue marble
b. 4 green marbles
c. 2 red marbles
d. 1 yellow marble
e. 2 black marbles
H. Making generalizations What is probability?
and abstract about the
lesson
I. Evaluating learning A. Answer the following. For numbers 1-5, use the terms from the text
box. Correctly place them on the probability line segment.

Certain unlikely impossible

as likely as unlikely likely

___________ ____________ _______________ ____________ ______________

(1) (2) (3) (4) (5)

B. Quantify each of the following events as certain, likely, unlikely, as

likely as unlikely, or impossible to happen. Give a reason for each of
your answers.
______________1. It will snow tomorrow.
______________2. The sun will rise tomorrow.
______________3. The sports’ analyst says that Manny Pacquiao has 75%
chance of winning his fight.
______________4. The weather forecast says that there is a 50% chance of
rain today.
______________5. The likelihood that 2 people in any group of 15 will the
same birthday is about 8%.
