UNIT RATIONALE
This unit is centered around animals and their habitats for second grade
science. This unit is made to be interdisciplinary, with strong emphasizes on
Science and ELA. Students will be exposed to multiple sources of media,
including, books, videos and articles about different habitats. Students will
also engage in activities each day to test understanding of the content learned
formatively.
The habitats we learn within this unit are related back to the student’s life.
Part of our discussion is deciding how these habitats are the same or different,
from the habitat we live in. Although students may never visit the habitats we
are learning about, they will understand why animals live there, and how
these animals survive. We will also discuss how we survive in our habitat.
The PDESAS has established the following standards for second grade
Science that will be covered within this unit, 1)3.1.2.C2- Explain that living
things can only survive if their needs are being met. The PDESAS also has
standards for second grade ELA that will be covered within this unit, 1)
CC.1.2.2.E- Use various text features and search tools to locate key facts or
information in a text efficiently. 2) CC.1.2.2.G- Explain how graphic
representations contribute to and clarify a text. 3) CC.1.4.2.A- Write
