CHAPTER 1
PROJECT OBJECTIVE

The abrasive jet machining process is a non -traditional machining process which
operates without much shock and heat. Abrasive jet machining is used for a variety of
operations like cutting, cleaning, and etching operations. In the Abrasive jet machining
process, the abrasive particles are made to strike on the work material at high velocity. A
high velocity jet of abrasive particles is carried by a pressurized stream of compressed air.
The high velocity of abrasive particles is obtained by converting the pressure energy of
compressed air to its Kinetic energy .

The objective of abrasive jet machining (AJM) is a non-traditional machining process

with several specific goals and advantages:

Objective 1: (Material Removal)The primary objective of AJM is to efficiently

remove material from a workpiece.

Objective 2: (Precision Machining)AJM is capable of achieving high precision and

intricate shapes. It is often used for tasks where conventional machining methods may be
impractical or less precise.

Objective 3: (Environmental Friendliness) It is considered an environmentally friendly

process because it generates minimal waste and does not produce hazardous fumes or
chemicals.

Objective 4: (Minimal Distortion) AJM minimizes workpiece distortion or residual

stresses since it operates at low temperatures, it is suitable for brittle and heat
sensitive material.

CHAPTER 2
DESIGN & COMPONENTS

2.1 Design Overview

Abrasive jet machining (AJM) is a material removal process that uses a high-velocity stream
of abrasive particles suspended in a gas or air to remove material from the workpiece.

2.2 Key Components

The key components and parts of abrasive jet machining include:

Gas Supply: - A high-velocity jet of air and enclosed abrasive particles are aimed at the
workpiece under controlled conditions.
The gas is supplied under a pressure of 4 bar, material is removed by fine particles of
0.025mm.

Pressure Gauge: - The pressure gauge is used to control the pressure of the compress used
in the abrasive jet machining. As the pressure decides the depth of cutting and the amount
of force required for cutting.

Mixing chamber: - In the mixing chamber abrasive powder is being fed and with the help
of a vibrator amount of abrasives can be controlled. So that the abrasives and the gasses
will be mixed thoroughly in the mixing chamber.

Nozzle: Abrasives: - Silicon carbide, aluminum oxide and many others are used as
abrasives in abrasive jet machining. The shape of the abrasives can be regular or irregular.
The size of the abrasives is around 10 to 50 microns. The mass flow rate of the abrasives is
around 2-20 grams/min.

The selection of abrasives depends upon MRR, type of work material, and type of
machining accuracy required.

Sodium bicarbonate size of 27 microns and used for Cleaning, deburring, and cutting of
soft material.
