Figure 1 shows the cumulatively compounded dc generator. The magneto motive force produced
from the series field and shunt field are positive. Hence, the total fields flux increases.

In the given condition the generator is shut down and the shunt field connections are reversed.
The generator starts running with reverse shunt field connection as shown in Figure 2. The
residual flux in the field coil develops a small internal generated voltage at the terminals. This
developed voltage causes a current to flow in the field coil. The current flowing in the shunt field
is away from the dot and produces a negative magneto motive force. The field produced in the
shunt field opposes the residual flux and nullifies the residual flux. Hence, there is no residual flux
in the shunt field to build up the voltage. The total magneto motive force from the two field coils
reduces.

Therefore, no voltage builds up due to reduced residual field flux in the shunt field.

(b)

The generator now rotates in the opposite direction and also the shunt field is reversed. The
residual flux in the field coil causes an internal generated voltage in the machine. The generated
voltage causes a current to flow in the shunt field coil. Now the current flowing in the shunt field
produces a field flux which is added with the residual flux and increases the field flux. So, the
voltage starts to build up in the machine.

Therefore, voltage is builds up in the generator due to increased residual flux.

(c)

The compound wound generator has two windings; series winding and shunt field winding. If the
flux produced by series field winding assists the flux produced by shunt field winding, then the
machine is cumulative compound generator.

If the flux produced by series field winding opposes the flux produced by shunt field winding, then
the machine is differentially compound generator.

When the shunt field winding is reversed the field produced in the shunt field is a negative
magneto motive force. The series field coil produces a positive magneto motive force. Hence, the
two field fluxes are opposing each other. So, the generator is a differentially compound generator.
