Lesson Plan In Media and Information Literacy

(Grade 11- AGRICROP)


Date: December 15, 2022
Time: 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

1. Identify codes, convention, and message and how they affect the audience, producers, and
other stake holders.
2. Present information appropriately through codes, conventions, and messages.
3. Reflect on how important information can be conveyed to create the desired impression.

II. Subject Matter


a. Topic: Media and Information Languages.
b. Materials: Computer Units, Projector, Activity sheet
c. Reference: Heinich, R., Molenda, M., Russel, J. & Smaldino, S. (1999). Instructional Media and Technologies for
Learning, 6th ed. NJ: Prentice Hall, Inc.

III. Learning Procedure

a. Preparatory activities (3 min)


Prayer
Greetings
Checking of attendance (by the assigned secretary)

b. Recall (5 min)
Give examples of information sources.
c. Lesson Proper

1. Motivation (7 min.)
 Read his sentence after writing it on the board “Language may be a source of
misunderstandings by Marshall McLuhan, 1964”

2. Presentation of the Objectives (2 min)

3. Presentation of the lesson (10 min.)


 Discussion and Demonstration
Discuss with the learners the following definitions:
Language - pertains to the technical and symbolic ingredients or
codes and conventions that media and information professionals
may select and use in an effort to communicate ideas, information
and knowledge
Media Languages - codes, conventions, formats, symbols and
narrative structures that indicate the meaning of media messages to
an audience.
Symbolic codes include the language, dress or actions of
characters, or iconic symbols that are easily understood. For
example, a red rose may be used symbolically to convey romance,
or a clenched fist may be used to communicate anger
Convention - In the media context, refers to a standard or norm
that acts as a rule governing behavior.
Messages - the information sent from a source to a receiver.
Audience - the group of consumers for whom a media message
was constructed as well as anyone else who is exposed to the
message.
Producers - People engaged in the process of creating and putting
together media content to make a finished media product.
Other stakeholders - Libraries, archives, museums, internet and
other relevant information providers.

4. Application/ Activity (20 min.)

 Let the students perform the activity.

 Instruct learners to form groups of 5 members. Provide each group with a


permanent marker and a sheet of Bond paper.
 Create signs and symbols in every statement:
 Love story
 No cellphone
 Funny face
 No smoking
 Student life

 Discuss with the following to the learners:


• How are symbols usually being presented?
• What is the importance of using symbols to convey a message or
information?
• How these symbols are presented in terms of fonts, images, colors, design
and others?

5. Valuing (5 min)

 If you are to create a postcard about your present situation of your life, what
technical and symbolic codes would you use to convey important information
and create the desired impression? Why?

IV. Evaluation (15 min)

 Group activity
 Instruct learners to form groups with five members and create their own media and
information presentation about promoting our school Don Vicente Romualdez National
High School (ex postcard, collage, advertisement, infomercial, story etc.)
 The group can choose its medium (video (30-40seconds), text (size: 12x12inches,
sound (30-40seconds) for the presentation.
 (In this portion I integrate numeracy other subjects such as Arts, Music, and ICT)

 Research and study legal, ethical, and societal issues in media and information
literacy.
