ACTIVITY 6

IBANA JOWIN D
AR-1A
TAIPEI 101 TOWER
NEW TAIPEI, TAIWAN

The world's quickest and most comfortable elevators are found in the
Taipei 101 Tower. The structure is stunning to look at and is a stunning
homage to steel, glass, and extraordinarily skillful engineering. Despite
this, the design is obviously influenced by the local Chinese culture. For
instance, there are eight canted portions because in Chinese, eight is
considered lucky. Traditional Chinese symbols of fulfillment are used to
decorate each segment, and they are large enough to be seen from the
ground.

The tower is made from pliant steel, which is strong and yet has a low
yield to ultimate tensile stress ratio so as to be able to accommodate
plastic strain in the event of natural disasters. The steel is at the same
time, weldable, so the concentration of alloying elements permitted is
rather low. The steel is microalloyed, thermomechanically processed
and accelerated cooled to produce a fine microstructure without the
excessive use of alloying elements which can compromise weldability.
The world's cleanest waste-to-energy facility is CopenHill. The tallest

climbing wall in the world is located on the corner of an energy
plant, a ski slope is located on the roof, and BIG searched for a way
to incorporate this into its architecture.

facade is made from large aluminium bricks in a checkered pattern.
The Palazzo Italia is a work of Italian
architecture and construction, a work
distinguished by experimentation and
innovation in terms of design, materials, and
technologies used. It is a representation of
the modern factory.

Palazzo Italy represented the idea of

cohesion in which the power of attraction
results in the rediscovery of a sense of
neighborhood and belonging. It is the first
building made of concrete that’s designed
to clear the air.

The facade, a mixture of cement and Titanium

dioxide metal, captures nitrogen-oxide pollution

PALAZZO ITALIA and converts it into a harmless salt that easily

rinses off the walls when it rains.

3 BUILDING METALS
OCULUS CENTER
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK

Santiago Calatrava, a Spanish architect, modeled the Oculus like a

dove in flight. The building is made of white steel ribs that gently
curve and rise from the ground to cover a large concourse with
an elliptical dome. The building utilizes 11,500 tons of structural
steel, and the concourse, which is free of internal columns, has a
length of 350 feet and a height of 160 feet.
RAIFFEISENBANK
OBERES RHEINTAL
ALTSTÄTTEN, SWITZERLAND

Raiffeisenbank Oberes Rheintal has shown courage in

innovative architecture. The building designed by the
architecture office Carlos Martinez Architekten based in
Berneck (Switzerland) stands out immediately due to the net-
like façade made of white concrete with titanium dioxide
THE CRESCENT
SURAT, INDIA.

The Crescent was designed by Sanjay Puri Architects, Each

fin is clad with weathering steel – the pre-rusted metal
often known by the brand name Corten – giving the
building a distinct orange colour.

The angular form is a direct response to the intense sun,

whichresults in extreme temperatures for much of the year.
The curving wall forms a protective shield against the southern sun
and opens out to accommodate a series of layered north-facing
windows.
