Çimenlik Fortress, which was one of the two fortresses that provided the defense of Çanakkale Strait
and which maintains its vision in history as a museum, is an original battlefield.
Great Turkish Sailor and Cartographer Piri Reis wrote his worldwide
famous work ‘‘Kitab-ı Bahriye’’ (The Book of Navigation) in Kale-i
Sultaniye (Çimenlik Fortress) and in Kilitbahir Fortresses.
In the museum, exhibition areas about Turkish Naval History and
Turkish Republican Navy can be found.
History
Çanakkale Naval Museum Command was founded in 1982 when Çimenlik Fortress was granted to the Naval Forc-
es Command and opened its doors on March 18, 1982 under the name of “Çanakkale Strait Command Museum”.
The museum obtained 1st Class Military Museum status in 2003 and was renamed as “Çanakkale Naval Museum
Command”. Kale-i Sultaniye (Çimenlik Fortress), which is located inside the museum, was built by Sultan Mehmet
the Conqueror in 1462-1463.
