B. Development
As you can see all the points form a straight line. Using a graph, you can determine the
slope of the line.
The slope of a line number that measures its “steepness”. It also characterized the direction of
the line. It is determined by the rise over the run between two points. The graph at the right is the
graph of the equation x + y = 1. The slope of the line can be determined by the rise over the run
between two points. M is use to represent the slop of the line.

Example 1:
From the point (3, 4), the run is 6, however since the direction is to the left, you use -6.
Negative is use for direction. The rise is 6 units.
rise 6
M= = = -1
run −6
The slope is negative when the line falls to the right. When the line rises to the right the slope
id positive.
The graph of equation -2x + 3 = -5 is a line the rises to the right. The slope is

Given only two points ( x 1, y 1) without the graph, you can find the slope of the line using the

Example: Find the slope of the line that passes through (-3,2) and (3,-4)
Solution: x 1=−3, y 1= 2; x 2= 3, y 2= -4
y 2− y −4−2 6

B. Find three solutions for the linear equation 4x – 3y = , and plot the solutions as points on a
coordinate plane.
4x - 3y = 1
x y (x,y)
V. ASSESSMENT Quiz no.
A. Given: x + 2y = 5
1. Find 2 solutions of the equation
2. Graph the two points
3. Find the slope
B. Draw the map of your community where your house is at the origin then plot at least
five (5) houses of your classmates. Write the coordinate of each classmate’s house.
The learners will answer the questions about the lesson based on their personal insights. (5
minutes)
