Case Study

You are a teacher at Burneside Academy, located in Kingston, Jamaica. Your grade 4

classroom is a microcosm of the island's rich diversity. You have 25 students, each bringing

their unique backgrounds, abilities, and needs. There is a mix of cultures, including

Afro-Jamaican, Indo-Jamaican, and Chinese-Jamaican families. The socioeconomic spectrum

ranges from working-class households to more affluent families. In your classroom, you

notice different learning styles and preferences. Some students thrive in group activities,

while others excel individually. Some students use Jamaican Patois predominantly while

others speak English fluently.

During a "Culture Day" event, students enthusiastically shared aspects of their diverse

backgrounds. However, during a cultural project in your classroom, you observe that attitudes

towards diversity vary among students. Some show curiosity and openness, while others

exhibit reservations based on cultural differences. There were some students that held

misconceptions about each other's customs. This resulted in a challenge where students with

different beliefs had several disagreements during a cultural project.

1. Identify THREE aspects of diversity in the Jamaican society that are present in your

class at Burneside Academy. Provide ONE example for each aspect of diversity

identified. 6 marks
6 Explain TWO possible ways in which the diversity of the students in your class at

Burneside Academy could have contributed to EITHER the success of the culture event

OR the challenges during the cultural project. 6 marks

3. Outline TWO strategies that can be used to manage diversity within your class at

Burneside Academy. (The strategies should focus on harnessing the diverse

backgrounds and perspectives of your students to promote tolerance and effectively

handle conflicts that may arise due to differing beliefs and misconceptions among

them). Justify the use of each strategy selected. 9 marks
