GRAMMAR

The Focus of this Lesson is Compound Nouns in Turkish.

Bu hafta sonu meşgul müsün?
"Are you busy this weekend?"

In this lesson you will learn about words that are categorized by their structure.

There are three sub-categories of words that are categorized by their structure.

1) Compound nouns

2) Compound adjectives

3) Compound verbs

In this lesson, we'll show you compound nouns in detail.

Although there are some exceptions, compound nouns are usually written together. Let's see
the various ways compound nouns can be composed.

1) Compound nouns can be formed as a noun clause, as in tamlayan (determinant) +

tamlanan (determined).

Now let's see some examples.

Ateş böceği, meaning "firefly," is composed of ateş ("fire") and böcek ("bug/insect").

Diz kapağı, meaning "kneecap," is composed of diz ("knee") and kapak ("cap/cover").

2) Our second category focuses on compound nouns that are adjective clauses.

Our first example is from the dialogue in this lesson- Pazartesi, meaning "Monday." This noun
is composed of Pazar("Sunday") and Ertesi("following/next"). Altogether it makes Pazartesi.

T URKI S HCLAS S 101.COM LOWER BEGI NNER S 1 #21 - GOI NG ON A WEEKEND HI KE I N T URKEY 5
Notice that the first vowel of ertesi, which is "e," is missing. When two nouns are combined, a
vowel deletion occurs for easier pronunciation.

Now let's see another example- sivrisinek, meaning "mosquito." Sivri means "sharp" and sinek
means "fly." Sivri is an adjective while sinek is a noun.

3) Our third category is formed when a noun and a verb or an auxiliary verb come together.

Gecekondu, meaning "shanty house/slum," is composed of gece, meaning "night," and kondu,
meaning "to be put." Gece is a noun and kondu comes from the verb konmak.

4) Our last category is made out of two inflectional verbs. Together, however, they form a
noun.

Kaptıkaçtı means "purse/bag snatching." It is formed of kaptı, which is the past tense
containing the morpheme -di of kapmak and kaçtı, meaning "ran away." Kaçtı is the past tense
containing the morpheme -di of kaçmak. Kaptıkaçtı is the act of stealing something by
snatching it.

Did you notice another compound noun in the dialogue of this lesson?

It's hafta sonu, meaning "weekend." This compound noun is an exception as it is written
separately.

Examples from the Dialogue

1. Tabii. Bu pazartesi akşam yemeği yiyelim mi?

"Sure, let's have dinner Monday."

Sample Sentences

1. Bu çekyat açılmıyor.
"I can't open this sofabed."

2. Kahvaltı etmek istiyorum.

"I want to have breakfast."

3. Cankurtaran nerede kaldı?

"Where is the ambulance?"

CULTURAL INSIGHT

Popular Weekend Trips in Turkey

Although the majority of the Turkish people prefer to spend their free time in malls or
shopping districts on weekends, some choose more sporty outdoor options. A major spot for
outdoor-types living in Istanbul is Belgrad Forest on the European side. This forest has been
preserved since Ottoman times and it's still a major attraction for runners, orienteering lovers,
or picnicking families.

On the Asian side, one hotspot is the Caddebostan shore. You can find many young people
hanging out, practicing sports, listening to music and so on around this area. This area is also
only a five-minute walk from a famous shopping area, Bağdat streets. This street is often
referred as simply cadde, meaning "street," colloquially.
