Activities:

Before the Student Field Workers (SFWs) went to Tagumpay Sagop Bata Center they first came
to City Social Welfare and Development Office to inform and let their assigned Agency Field
Supervisors (AFS) sign it. After that we went to Human Resource Management Office (HRMO)
to inform Sir Winberth San Jose that we will be taking an absent to comply for the requirement
such as the NBI Clearance. When we arrived at the center, we taught the children about the
alphabet and had an art activity with them. In this activity we allowed the children to color the
drawings. When the children were asleep, the SFW did their daily requirements and helped
clean the facility since there was nothing to do that time.

Problems/ Difficulties Encountered:

One of the clients in the center who is deafmute was saying something to us and we do not
really understand her since we are not familiar with sign language. There was no houseparent
that time so we can’t ask someone who is more knowledgeable than us. The client had difficulty
breathing due to her asthma. Since she was deafmute, we cannot understand that she was
telling us that she was having a hard time breathing. Also, we were having a hard time finding
the device that was needed for her to be able to breath properly, since we are not familiar with
the center. On the other hand, before we left the center one of the clients told us that she would
be going home the next day and before we got to the van, she bid goodbye to us and hugged us
one by one. When it was my turn, she whispers (I love you ate) in my ears and hearing those
words made me sad and want to cry at the same time. She is a sweet and kind child, that is why
in the small amount of time that we shared from the center she left us with a lot of memories.

Learning Insights:

I realized that all the things that have been told to us in school is all true, that there will be time
when you get sad because the helping relationship will come to an end. For me, it was both a
saddening event of being a SFW and a happy moment at the same time because I know that
the client will now come back to a home where she feels safe. Just like what I have told during
our interview I easily get attached to a person most especially when they are so kind to me and
treats me well, but I did not allow my emotions to overwhelm me and let my tears drop since it is
one of the principles of being a social worker is the client worker relationship.
I just have kept in my mind that as a SFW I need to act professionally and prepare myself to this
kind of situations. Moreover, I realized that it is important to understand the non-verbal cues of a
person. When one of the deafmute clients was pointing at her neck and heart we easily
understood that she was having a hard time to breath properly, and because of that we were
able to give solutions to her situation.
