(When designing or analyzing a system, often it is useful to model the system graphically. Block
Diagrams are a useful and simple method for analyzing a system graphically.
A Transfer Function is the ratio of the output of a system to the input of a system, in the Laplace
domain considering its initial conditions to be zero. If we have an input function of 𝑟(𝑡) and
Laplace transformation of input is 𝑅(𝑠), and an output function 𝑐(𝑡) and Laplace transformation
of output is 𝐶(𝑠), we define the transfer function 𝐺(𝑠), to be):
ℒ[𝑐(𝑡)] 𝐶(𝑠)
𝐺(𝑠) = =
ℒ[𝑟(𝑡)] 𝑅(𝑠)
(The Transfer Function fully describes a control system and can be represented schematically by
using block diagrams)
(A control system may consist of a number of components. To show the functions performed by
each component, in control engineering, we commonly use a rectangular shaped diagram called
the block diagram.
Any item in any system may be represented as a simple block with an input and output as shown
in figure 1. In general terms, the input is designated R(s) and the output C(s).
The transfer functions of the components are usually entered in the corresponding blocks, which
are connected by arrows to indicate the direction of the flow of signals. The arrowhead pointing
toward the block indicates the input, and the arrowhead leaving away from the block represents the
output. Any linear control system may be represented by a block diagram consisting of blocks,
summing points, and branch points).
(Referring to Figure 2, a circle is the symbol that indicates a summing operation. The plus or minus
sign at each arrowhead indicates whether that signal is to be added or subtracted. It is important
that the quantities being added or subtracted have the same dimensions and the same units).
(A signal may be taken from the output of a block and given to another block. A branch point or a
take-off point is a point from which the signal from a block goes concurrently to other blocks or
summing points. This point from which the signal is tapped is also known as pick off point and is
shown in Figure 3).
(Because of their simplicity and versatility, block diagrams are often used by control engineers to
describe all types of systems. A block diagram can be used simply to represent the composition
and interconnection of a system. Also, it can be used, together with transfer functions, to represent
the cause-and-effect relationships throughout the system. Transfer Function is defined as the
relationship between an input signal and an output signal to a device.
Any linear control system may be represented by a block diagram consisting of blocks, summing
points, and branch points.
The advantages of the block diagram representation of a system lie in the fact that it is easy to form
the overall block diagram for the entire system by merely connecting the blocks of the components
according to the signal flow and that it is possible to evaluate the contribution of each component
to the overall performance of the system. In general, the functional operation of the system can be
visualized more readily by examining the block diagram than by examining the physical system
itself. A block diagram contains information concerning dynamic behavior, but it does not include
any information on the physical construction of the system. Consequently, many dissimilar and
unrelated systems can be represented by the same block diagram. It should be noted that in a block
diagram the main source of energy is not explicitly shown and that the block diagram of a given
system is not unique. A number of different block diagrams can be drawn for a system, depending
on the point of view of the analysis).
Kapalı Çevrim Bir Sistemin Blok Diyagramı (Block Diagram of a Closed-Loop System)
Şekil 4’te kapalı çevrim basit bir sistemin blok diyagramı verilmiştir. Çıkış C(s) toplama noktasına
geri beslenmektedir.
(Figure 4.4 shows an example of a block diagram of a closed-loop system. The output C(s) is fed
back to the summing point, where it is compared with the reference input R(s). The closed-loop
nature of the system is clearly indicated by the figure. The output of the block, C(s) in this case, is
obtained by multiplying the transfer function G(s) by the input to the block, E(s)).
Şekil 4. Basit bir geri beslemeli sistem blok diyagramı (Figure 4. Simple feedback system)
Geri besleme sinyali B(s) ile hata sinyali E(s) oranına açık-çevrim (open-loop) transfer fonksiyonu
adı verilir.
(The ratio of the feedback signal B(s) to the actuating error signal E(s) is called the open-loop
transfer function. That is):
Çıkış C(s)’in hata sinyali E(s)’e oranına ileri-besleme (feedforward) transfer fonksiyonu denir ve
aşağıdaki gibi ifade edilir:
(The ratio of the output C(s) to the actuating error signal E(s) is called the feedforward transfer
function, so that):
(If the feedback transfer function H(s) is unity then the open loop transfer function and the
feedforward transfer function are the same).
C ( s)
R( s)
4’te verilen basit bir kapalı çevrim sisteminin transfer fonksiyonunun bulunması aşağıda
verilmiştir. (C(s): Çıkış ve R(s): Giriş):
(The system shown in Figure 4 can be replaced by a single block by finding the transfer function
C ( s)
. At this closed loop system, the output C(s) and input R(s) are related as follows):
R( s)
𝐶(𝑠) = 𝐸(𝑠)𝐺(𝑠)
𝐸(𝑠) = 𝑅(𝑠) ∓ 𝐵(𝑠) } 𝐶(𝑠) = [𝑅(𝑠) ∓ 𝐶(𝑠)𝐻(𝑠)]𝐺(𝑠)
} ⇒ 𝐸(𝑠) = 𝑅(𝑠) ∓ 𝐶(𝑠)𝐻(𝑠)
𝐵(𝑠) = 𝐶(𝑠)𝐻(𝑠)
𝐶(𝑠) 𝐺(𝑠)
=
𝑅(𝑠) 1 ± 𝐺(𝑠)𝐻(𝑠)
(Thus, the output of the closed loop system clearly depends on both the closed loop transfer
function and the nature of the input).
(The transfer function of a control system may be obtained by manipulation of its block diagram
and by its ultimate reduction into one block. For complicated block diagrams, it is often necessary
to move a comparator or a branch point to make the block diagram reduction process simpler).

(What we want to find here is the ratio between C and R. For this reason, the point names that we
add to the system later write in terms of the system parameters then we could obtain the ratio
between C and R. Where we start is also important. Otherwise, our operations may become more
complex than necessary. Generally, operations are started with the first naming after the letter E,
which symbolizes the error).

Bazı sistemlerde bozucu girişin etkisi sistemin çıkış fonksiyonunu bulmayı karmaşık hale
getirebilir.
uygulayabiliriz. Süper pozisyon ilkesi tanım olarak şu şekildedir. Birden fazla girdinin etki ettiği
doğrusal sistemlerde, sistemde meydana gelen toplam değişimin sisteme etki eden girdilerin her
birinin ayrı ayrı değişimlerinin toplamına eşit olmasıdır. Bunu kontrol sistemlerine uyarlarsak,
(In some systems, the effect of disruptive input can complicate finding the output function of the
system. Therefore, we can obtain the output function with a different method. The fact that the
superposition principle can be applied in linear systems facilitates the solution of the systems. Since
the systems we are considering are linear systems, we can apply the superposition principle. The
superposition principle, by definition, is as follows. In linear systems affected by more than one
input, the total change in the system is equal to the sum of the individual changes of each of the
inputs affecting the system. If we apply this to control systems, it is possible to give input to the
system both from the reference and from the disturbance effect. Output is the result of these inputs.
This output is obtained by considering that there is only one input in the system and the value of
the other input is zero. This process is repeated as many times as there are inputs, and the effect of
each input is calculated one by one. Finally, these effects are summed up and the result is obtained).
