Structural Analysis: HW2

A plan lattice formed by 2 rods elements (fig. 1). 2 bars are steel with module of Young E, constant
section A and a linear density  . We shall take into account the pure weight of bars (Y - is there the
axis of gravity and g the acceleration of the gravity). The structure is subjected to a vertical
concentrated force P in the node 2.

Part 1.

1- Define the connectivities of elements, numbers of local DOF and global DOF by element, the
number of total DOF and the number of effective DOF (unknowns)
2- For every element, calculate the elementary stiffness matrix and the elementary equivalent
vector of loads in its own local basis and transform it to the global basis
3- Assemble matrices and elementary vectors to obtain the global matrix and the global vector
4- Introduce the bounderies conditions and solve the global system.
5- Calculate the reactions of supports to nodes 1 and 3.
6- Calculate the normal efforts in node of both bars, then calculate the normal effort in the
middle of the rods.
Part 2

1- Repeat questions 4 to 6 of the first part to solve the problem of Figure 2

2- Calculate, for this case, the reaction in support 2

Part 3

It is proposed to solve the problem of FIG. 3. In this case, the node 2 is subjected to an imposed
displacement U along the X axis and to a load P following Y.

1- Repeat questions 4 to 6 of the first part, to solve the problem of Figure 3

2- Calculate, for this case, the reaction due to the displacement imposed on node 2
