1. Describe a Location (El Paraiso, El Paraiso)

El Paraiso has a territorial area of approximately 415 km². According to the Censo

Nacional de Población y Vivienda (2013), it is made up of 13 villages and 140 villages

registered, and the geographic identification code of El Paraíso, El Paraíso is 0704. It

was called Santa Clara, a place that served the farmers of Danlí for cattle raising. Its

first residents were the inhabitants of the valley of the trapiche and commissary of

Danlí, who formed the village and called it "Aldea de El Paraiso" of the municipality of

Danlí. It was elevated to the municipality on March 22nd, 1874. According to INE

(2018), the population is 46,199 people, comprising 21,920 men and 21,920 women;

with a population in the urban area of 29,752 people and in the rural of 16,447 people.

2. The Five Themes of Geography

The National Council for Geographic Education defined in 1984 that the five themes of

geography are location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, and region. I

will explain what is each theme:

2.1. Location

The location allows you to discuss places in the world in a way that is easy to

understand. If we ask for information about a place, its location is first mentioned.

There are two types of locations absolute and relative.

2.1.1. Absolute location

Absolute location is the exact spot on Earth where a place can be found. When we want

to say the absolute location the latitude and longitude have to be said. Latitude lines

measure the distance north or south of the equator, and longitude lines measure east or
west of the Greenwich meridian. For example, the Empire State Building is located at

40.7 degrees north (latitude), 74 degrees west (longitude).

2.1.2. Relative location

The relative location is when the directions of one place are in relation to other places.

For example, my house is three blocks from the restaurant Ginger or Vida Estudiantil is

next to a clothes boutique.

2.2. Places

Places help to describe the physical and human characteristics of a location. The

physical characteristics describe the climate of the location and its landscapes. Human

characteristics are things created by humans like religion, language, transportation, etc.

2.3. Regions

This is how geographers divide groups of places, and it is used to study differences and

similarities in the physical and human characteristics of locations.

2.4. Movement

This theme talks about how people, goods, and animals move in the world. It studies the

migration of people caused by wars or other social problems.

2.5. Human-Environment Interaction

Just like the name says, this theme mentions how people adapt and change the

environment through time. This happens because humans depend on their environment

and its resources (food and minerals). Many places in the world have changed because

of humans, this can be positive or negative for the environment. (Rosenberg, 2019)
3. Planet Earth

According to NASA (2023), planet Earth is the third planet from the sun. And it is the

only planet that has living things in it. Also, Earth is the fifth largest planet in the solar

system. The unique characteristic of our planet is that it has water and oxygen. The

surface of Earth is covered 71% by water and a fifth of the atmosphere consists of

oxygen.

3.1. Earth’s Movement

Earth is moving in three different ways at the same time. The first is that it rotates on its

axis. The second is that it orbits the sun. And the last one is that it orbits the galaxy with

the rest of the planets. One rotation on the axis takes 24 hours and when it orbits the

sun, which is called a revolution, it takes 365 days, 6 hours, and 9 minutes.

Like the other planets of the Solar System, the Earth rotates around itself and moves

through space around the Sun, without stopping. These movements, called rotation and

revolutions, create the day and night and the seasons of the year. The Earth is in

continuous motion. Like the other planets of the Solar System, it rotates on itself and

moves around the Sun, without stopping. Both movements influence our life. In the

rotational motion, the Earth rotates on its axis from west to east, so that the sun always

rises in the east and sets in the west. (NASA, 2023)
