PhD Opportunities at Texas A&M University

Dr. Amal Bakchan

I am seeking to hire PhD students to start in Spring 2024/Fall 2024 to work on research projects—primarily focusing on
water and wastewater infrastructures—in the broad areas of: (1) socio-technical infrastructure systems management in
extreme contexts (e.g., extreme events, development crises); (2) regionalization of management of decentralized systems
in rural, underserved communities; (3) workforce development; and (4) utility management and governance. Our goal is
to advance environmental justice and equity in the provision of water and wastewater infrastructure systems. These projects
will apply both quantitative and qualitative analysis methods, as well as involve collaborations across multiple institutions.
Students will join the Department of Construction Science at Texas A&M University. The positions will be funded through
graduate assistantships (research and/or teaching), providing stipend, tuition coverage, conference support, and benefits.
Preference will be given to candidates holding a master’s degree.

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field
• Demonstrated expertise and interests in how people, infrastructure, and technology interact
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Meet admission requirements

Preferred Qualifications
• Knowledge and prior experience in qualitative analysis methods, network optimization, statistics, and
spatiotemporal data analytics
• Experience with any programming language (e.g., Python, R, Java)
• Professional experience in the water industry
• Experience conducting independent and/or collaborative research

To apply, please email Dr. Amal Bakchan (bakchan@tamu.edu|) with the subject line “Prospective PhD Student”.
Applicants should attach the following in a single PDF: (1) 1-2 pages statement of purpose, describing your interest in
the position and relevant experience (be as specific as possible of a research idea that you would like to work on,
considering the topic areas mentioned above); (2) curriculum vitae (CV); (3) (un)official transcript(s); (4) standard testing
scores (GRE, TOEFL for international students); and (5) writing sample(s) or past research publications.
