Gerber Baby Food Company wishes to compare the weight gain

of infants using its brand versus its competitor's. A sample of
15 babies using the Gerber products and another sample of 17
babies using the competitor's brand are collected. The
results are summarized in the following table:
3.42 3.48 4.12 3.56 3.74 3.02 4.11 3.56 3.48
Gerber
2.99 3.14 3.69 3.92 3.09 4.32
4.23 4.25 4.36 4.39 3.25 3.89 3.56 3.25 3.78
Competitor
3.01 4.02 3.78 4.25 4.36 4.58 3.59 4.23

Can we conclude that babies using the Gerber brand gained

weights differ than babies using the other brand?
Solution:

1. H0: µ1 = µ2
2. H1: µ1 ≠ µ2
3. Test statistics:

𝒕 = −𝟐. 𝟐𝟒𝟔
4. Significance:

𝒑 − 𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆 = 𝟎. 𝟎𝟑𝟐 < 𝟎. 𝟎𝟓

5. We reject Ho
Solution:

We reject the null hypothesis H0; that

is, babies using the Gerber brand gained less
weight compared with its Competitor.
