Moments (2 support problems)

1. A uniform metre rule of weight 1.2N rests horizontally upon two knife edge supports at the 100mm and 800mm
marks. Draw a diagram showing this arrangement and calculate the support force on the ruler due to each
support. [0.51N @ 100mm and 0.69N @ 800mm]
2. A uniform beam of 230N and overall length 10m rests horizontally on top of two brick walls, 8.5m apart such
that that a length of 1.0m projects beyond one wall and 0.5m projects beyond the other. Calculate A) the
support force of each wall on the beam. B) the force of the beam on each wall. [A. 122N @ 1m end and 108 at
the other both vertically upwards. B. Same forces as A but vertically downwards]
3. A uniform bridge of weight 1200kN and of length 17m rests on supports at each end which are 1m wide. A
stationary lorry of weight 60kN has it’s centre of mass 3.0m from the centre of the bridge. Calculate the support
force on the bridge at each end. [620kN & 640kN]
