Class Ex-1 - Measurement of Resistance
Class Ex-1 - Measurement of Resistance
Objectives:
The students will learn to read and obtain the basic standard codes written on a resistor. They
also apply measurement techniques to measure the resistance of a resistor.
Apparatus Required:
Multimeter, Connecting wires, Different types of Resistors
Resistor
Multimeter as Ohmmeter
Connect the Ω lead and Ground lead in Multimeter to a resistor provided to you using
connecting wires as shown in the picture above.
Switch on the power supply of the Multimeter. Set the Multimeter to read ohm with
appropriate range.
Note the resistance readings of various resistances given to you by your tutor and enter these
measured values in the given table.

You will be provided with 5 resistors on which their corresponding BS code value is written. You have to
refer to slides “Electrical components – Resistors” in Moodle to find the resistance value. The tolerance
letter coding has to be taken in to account in case your resistor code contains tolerance code.
You will be provided with 5 surface mount resistors on which their corresponding code value is written.
You have to refer Apendix-1 to find the resistance value.
Question:
1. What is tolerance of a resistor?
2. There are two resistors whose tolerances are 1% and 5% respectively. Which one of them will give
you less value of percentage deviation when you measure it?
