SETS

A set is a group or collection of things or objects that have something


in common.
The arrangement of the objects in the set does not matter.
The objects or things in a set are called:
- Members
- Elements

The members or elements in each set are enclosed in:

- Loop

OR
- Curly brackets { }
Example:
(a) F is a set of fruits beginning with c.
F = {cashew, cherry, coconut}

(b) A is the set of even numbers between 1 and 9.


A = {2, 4, 6, 8}

(c) D is the set of days of the week beginning with T.


D = {Tuesday, Thursday}

(d) C is the set of colours of the rainbow.


C = {red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet}
Types Of Sets
Types of sets include:
- Equal set
- Equivalent set
- Empty set
Equal Sets
Equal sets are sets which have the same amount of exact members.
Example:

(a) Set A = { a, e, i, o, u}
Set B = {e, o, u, a, i}
Set A and Set B are Equal sets.

(b) Set R = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9}


Set S = {5, 3, 1, 9, 7}
Set R and Set S are Equal sets.
Equivalent Sets
Equivalent sets are those sets which have the same amount of different
members.

Example:

(a) Set B = {a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h}


Set C = { 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16}
Set B and Set C are Equivalent sets.

(b) Set D = { Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday}


Set M = { April, May, June}
Set B and Set C are Equivalent sets.
Empty Sets

A set which has no member or


element is called an empty set or null
set.

3. C is the first five consonants of the alphabet.

4. J is the months of the year beginning with J.
