1.0 Experiment Outcomes :
At the end of lab session, students should be able:
a) To understand the mechanical construction of an electromagnetic relay.
b) To learn how to use relay.
c) To measure voltage and current from relay circuit.

2.0 Apparatus/Equipment :
a) DC Power Supply, 6V
b) Analogue Multimeter
c) Project Board
d) Jumper
e) 1 Pieces Resistors 330 Ohm
f) 1 Relay 6VDC
g) LED (1 RED, 1 GREEN)

3. PROCEDURE
1) the experiment continues by using the existing circuit in figure
2) a multimeter is used to measure the voltage across each contact with PB1 ON and OFF.
3) the voltage across the coil is measured with PB1 ON and OFF
4) the current flowing through the coil is measured when PB1 is ON and OFF.
5) the current flowing through the LED is measured when PB1 is ON and OFF
6) all results/observations are recorded in a table

65 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Explain how a solenoid works and what it is used for?

A solenoid works by producing an electromagnetic field around a movable core, called an
armature. When compelled to move by the electromagnetic field, the motion of that armature
opens and closes valves or switches and turns electrical energy into mechanical motion and
force.
2. The solenoid is based on electromagnetism application concept, what are some
advantages and disadvantages of using solenoids. The advantages of the solenoid-pilot
design are high flow capability, reliability and low power consumption. The disadvantage is
that it requires a minimum pilot pressure to shift the valve plunger. The advantage of a direct
acting solenoid is that there is no minimum pressure requirement.

6. CONCLUSION
When the number of turns of copper wire increases, the weight of nails will
increases, then force of solenoid will increases when current is constant.
