COURSE DESCRIPTION

This ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSE COVERS A2 – PRE-INTERMEDIATE LEVEL (Common European Framework) and
aims to develop reading, speaking, writing and listening skills in undergraduates. In this course, students will be asked
to partake in a wide array of communicative activities to promote the students’ self-confidence in using the English
Language in everyday situations.
The above purposes can only be entirely achieved if students engage in class activities and fully commit to self-studying
on a daily basis.

LEARNING OUTCOMES (“Can do” goal in line with the Council of Europe’s “Can do” statements)

By the end of the semester, students are expected to have developed language competencies, such as:

1. Ask and Talk /Ask and Answer / about personal likes and dislikes; questions about daily routines; your learning
needs and ability; personal events in the past; personal achievements and experiences; polite questions; questions
about past actions; illnesses and give advice; Say when you are the same as / different from another person; Talk
for an extended period on a familiar topic; Understand and talk about a magazine quiz; Tell a friend about your
future plans
2. Explain why you like a piece of music, your preference for a holiday destination, a person’s physical appearance,
someone’s personality; Make arrangements with a friend; Contribute to a simple discussion; Agree on choices
with a partner; Exchange opinions with a friend
3. Compare people; Describe yourself when you were younger, a favourite place, simple changes; Make a simple
informal presentation, general predictions about the future; Give explanations for choices; Find out personal
information
4. Write an informal email to update someone on your life; an informal letter to a friend; a thank-you note; a personal
profile
COURSE PROGRAMME

I - English Language

To consolidate students’ knowledge of key components of the English grammar, to broaden their range of
vocabulary and to help improve pronunciation, the following will be focused on throughout the course: Speaking,
Listening and Writing – Punctuation, Capitalisation, Spelling, Possessive’s.

II - Vocabulary and Reading

Expansion of vocabulary through reading and analysing language in context, drawing on a selection of authentic
oral and written texts from the adopted Course Book, Total English – Pre-Intermediate.

- Unit 1. 24 Hours: daily routines and activities; likes and dislikes; sleeping habits; shops and shopping
- Unit 2. Music: music; biographies; word families (adjective/noun); achievements (verb/noun collocations)
- Unit 3. Taste: food and drink; cooking and eating; restaurants
- Unit 4. Survival: describing people; survival skills; survival English
- Unit 5. Stages: times of life; life activities; friendship; good and bad habits
- Unit 6. Places: geographical features; describing natural places; machines at home
- Unit 7. Body: parts of the body; describing appearance and character; illnesses and injuries; symptoms
- Unit 8. Speed: speed; verbs about change; phrasal verbs about relationships

III - English Grammar

Acquisition of the following grammar items:

- Adjectives: comparatives and superlatives;


- Adverbs of Frequency; So and Neither; Too, Too much/many, Enough;
- State Verbs; Should, Have to, Used to, Going To, Will; Irregular Verbs ( List 2);
- Verb Tenses and Uses - present simple, present continuous, present continuous (future arrangements), past
continuous, past simple of regular verbs / of irregular verbs, present perfect simple;
- Questions; Defining Relative Clauses; Indirect Questions; First Conditional; Gerunds and Infinitives;
Present Simple Passive
ASSESSMENT

➢ TOPICS: choose one from the file titled


“Project Work - Topics” in InfoAlunos. The class presentations will

Re-sit Exam
100% Scheduled by UMa.
➢ It covers ALL content taught.

• Students who have not reached an average final mark of 9.45 will be allowed to do the Re-sit Exam at
the end of the semester. It will count as 100% and will include all the semester material.

• All the work assigned – both class assignments and homework assignments – during the semester is
exam-relevant. Home assignments are compulsory, and in class meetings, students are expected to be
participative and make active contributions.
