3 Geology of the Area
3.1 Regional & Local Geology
Geology-wise, Bangalore district shows the dominant presence of an ‘Archaean’ crystalline formation comprising the
Peninsular Gneissic complex with a small patch of hornblende schist in the northern part and intrusive Closepet granites all
along the western part of the district. These young Gneissic complexes are in the age range of 2.6 to 3.0 billion years. They
are essentially granodioritic and granitic formed due to several thermal-tectonic movements with large influx of sialic materials
representing remobilized parts of an older crust with abundant additions of granitic materials. These gneissic complexes act
as basement for belt of schists, largely basaltic and characterized by gold mineralization, which is noticed in nearby Kolar.
Small stretch comprising unconsolidated sediments are also noticed in Channapatna and Devanahalli. The soil overburden
generally is dominated by silty sand /residual silt and shows presence of clay as a nominal interstitial binder. Overburden in
upper layers is generally in loose /medium compact condition especially in areas with high water table. The overburden

thickness is variable and is reflective of typical differential weathering that has occurred over a prolonged period. This is
followed by completely weathered rock and highly weathered rock.
The geology map of Bangalore is as under:
Geology map of the area is furnished in Figure 1.
3.2 Local Seismicity
Bangalore falls under Zone II of the Seismic Zoning Map as per IS: 1893 (Part I)-2002. Recent earthquakes that occurred
close to Bangalore were in the range of 2.0 to 5.5 on the Richter scale. On January 29, 2001, an earthquake with a
magnitude of 4.3 on the Richter scale hit in the Mandya area, with its epicenter about 35 km south of Bangalore.

5 Methodology of Field work

5.1 Boring and Drilling
Boreholes were sunk by deploying a heavy-duty rotary drilling rig using the conventional rotary drilling process. The
methodology followed for boring conformed to IS: 1892. Boring was processed by the cutting action of a rotating bit with
bentonite slurry circulation and by stabilizing the sides of the boreholes using casing pipes and bentonite slurry up to the
required depth to prevent side collapse. While this method was adequate to bore through the stiff soil stratum, progress of
boring slowed considerably near the soil - rock interface, including weathered rock formations. In such cases, further drilling
work was carried out by using Nx- size single/ double tube core barrel with TC (Tungsten Carbide) bits. When the progress of
drilling using TC bits slowed down considerably, diamond bit drilling was adopted. For drilling in hard rock, diamond bits with
single / double tube core barrel was used. The percentage CR (Core Recovery) and RQD (Rock Quality Designation) has
been recorded for the rock cores extracted and are presented in the bore logs.
The borehole logs are furnished in Annexure A.
5.2 Sampling
Disturbed samples have been collected from split spoon sampler by conducting the standard penetration tests below the
existing ground level as presented in the respective field bore logs.
First sample was collected at 0.5 m depth. There after disturbed soil samples was collected by conducting SPT at every 1.5
m intervals until refusal. Refusal means N>100.
5.3 Undisturbed Soil samples
Undisturbed soil samples are collected in cohesive soil layers and mentioned in respective bore logs.
5.4 Standard Penetration Test (SPT)
Standard Penetration Test (SPT) to determine penetration resistance was conducted in the boreholes generally up to refusal
depth using the procedure described in IS: 2131. In this method, split spoon sampler (50.8 mm OD and 35 mm ID) replaces
the driving bit and the sampler is driven by dropping a 63.5 kg hammer on the top of the driving collar with free fall of 75 cm.
The length of the sampler is 60 cm.
The sampler is first driven through 15 cm as “Seating Drive”. It is further driven through 30 cm. The number of blows required
to drive the sampler for 30 cm beyond seating drive is termed as “Penetration Resistance, N”.
Where it was not possible to penetrate the full length of SPT sampler and “refusal” was reached earlier, N values are
generally observed to be greater than 100.
Recorded ‘N’ values are mentioned in the respective bore log sheet.
5.5 Rock coring
Tungsten Carbide (TC) / Diamond bits were used to drill through weathered rock / hard rock stratum. Recovered cores were
measured and percentage CR and RQD has been calculated as under:
Length of core
% CR  x100
Length of run
Length of core in pieces of 101.6 mm ( 4 inches and above)
% RQD = x 100
Length of run
5.6 Ground Water Table
Ground Water Table (GWT) was not encountered in the boreholes at the time of Investigation.
5.7 Electrical Resistivity Test
Electrical Resistivity method is a highly popular geophysical technique used in Geo-technical studies. In this method, a known
current is sent into the ground through a pair of electrodes viz. “current electrodes” and the resulting potential (voltage)
developed across the ground surface is measured through another pair of electrodes known as “potential electrodes”. The

Page | 3
BRIT LOGISTICS PRIVATE
LIMITED Geotechnical Investigation Report

ratio between the potential (V) developed and the current (I) sent gives the resistance “R” and is measured with the help of a
resistivity meter. The resistance thus measured depends on the arrangement of electrodes, known as “configuration” and
also on the resistivity and thickness of the sub-surface formations. There are a number of electrode arrangements
(configuration), namely Wenner and Schlumberger. Wenner‘s configuration is commonly used. In Wenner’s configuration, all
the four electrodes are kept equidistant (known as “electrode separation” ‘a’) along a straight line symmetrically over the
measuring point.
In the present investigation, the Wenner’s configuration has been used. In this configuration, all four electrodes are kept
equidistant (known as “electrode separation” ‘a’) along a straight line symmetrically over the measuring point. The apparent
resistivity (a) is obtained by multiplying the configuration factor 2a with measured resistance (R) values for each interval
i.e.
a = 2aR
The apparent resistivity (a) in ohm- m is considered as the average resistivity of the formation from the surface up to a depth
of ‘a’ (i.e., electrode separation in m). Resistivity measurements give the values at the time of measurement under prevailing
conditions.
The Electrical Resistivity of soil noticed at the site ranges from 43.88 Ohm-m to 112.30 Ohm-m.
The Electrical Resistivity Test results and Curves are presented in Annexure A1.
5.8 Trial Pits
Trial pits of size 1.0 m x 1.0 m x 1.0 m are excavated manually at the locations identified by the Client. Brownish Grey silty
clay and clayey sand have been noticed in the trial pits up to the termination depth.
Trial Pit logs are furnished in Annexure A2.
Bulk soil samples are collected from the trail pits to conduct Compaction and CBR tests.
5.9 Percolation Test
Percolation test is conducted in the trial pits as per the procedure described in IS 2470 (Part 2) - 1985 (RA 2017). Percolation
pit of size 0.3 m x 0.3 m x 0.35 m has been excavated in the bottom of the trial pits to conduct percolation tests.
The test results are furnished in Annexure A3.

10 Safe Bearing Capacity (SBC) Calculations
Safe Bearing Capacity (SBC) Calculations for Isolated Foundations
Calculations for Net Safe Bearing capacity for the foundations is recommended based on following approach
 Shear Criteria recommended by IS: 6403
 Settlement criteria recommended by IS: 8009 (Part I)
Consistent with standard Geotechnical Practices, the lower of values worked out from shear as well as settlement approach
is recommended for design.
Net SBC Computations from Shear Criteria
The calculations are based on equation recommended by Code IS: 6403, which takes care of L/B ratio (shape), foundation
depth etc., along with other parameters based on general shear failure. The equation used to calculate net ultimate bearing
capacity (UBC) is as under.
Net UBC = c NcScdc ic + D (Nq -1) Sqdqiq + 0.5 B NSdi
Where, c = Cohesion of founding strata in t/m2
 = Angle of internal friction of founding strata
Sc, Sqand S = Shape factors referred from IS: 6403 for square foundation = 1.3, 1.2 and 0.8 respectively
NC, Nq and N = bearing capacity factors referred from IS: 6403
dc, dq and d = Depth factors referred from IS: 6403
√N= tan2(45+ /2
dc = 1+0.2(D/B) √N
dq and d = 1+0.1(D/B) √N
ic ,iq and i = Inclination factors, all three factors are equal to 1
D = Depth of foundation below existing ground level (m)
B = Width of foundation = 2, 3 & 4 m
 = Bulk unit weight of founding strata
Net Allowable Bearing Pressure Computations from Settlement Criteria
Estimation of settlements are computed as per the procedure described in IS 8009 Part 1, Cl.9.1.2, Method Based on Static
Cone Penetration test”.
Settlement St = 2.303 (Ht/C) log10 (p0 + Δp /p0)

11 Conclusion and Recommendations
 Eighteen boreholes BH 02 to BH 19 were drilled at site, at the locations identified by the Client.
 The sub-soil profile encountered in the boreholes is described in Clause.7 above.
 Based on the sub-soil profile encountered, shallow foundations such as Isolated / Spread foundation is suitable for
the proposed structure.
 The recommended SBC for isolated foundations of width 2 m, 3 m and 4 m is as under:
Foundation Net SBC for shallow foundations (t/sq.m)
Stratum at the
Location Depth below Width (m)

EGL (m) 2.0 3.0 4.0
1.5 27 31 22
All BHs 2.0 Clayey Silt 35 33 20
3.0 51 28 18

 Strata at the foundation level shall be thoroughly checked before placing the foundations on loose soil / weathered
rock strata. If any loose soil pockets or cavities, uneven rock surface are present / noticed they shall be replaced
with lean concrete before placing the foundations.
 It is important that undisturbed soil (natural ground) or adequately compacted soil be present at the bottom of the
footing excavations and that the footings be cleaned of all loose debris prior to placement of concrete.

 The chemical contents present in the soil are well within the permissible limits. Hence, no special precautions are
necessary for the concreting job.
 The excavated material may be used for general filling purposes as well as for filling foundation pits. If the in-situ
material is to be used as a backfilling material, it should be compacted to not less than 97% of the MDD in 300 mm
layers.
 Good site drainage must be provided to reduce the risk of sub-surface materials becoming saturated, the risk of
differential settlement and to prevent scouring and erosion of the surface materials. The service trenches are
suggested to be located at least 1.5 m away from any of the structures anticipated.
 Two ERTs were conducted at the site as per Wenner’s 4-pin method and readings were taken up to 20 m depth
along the EW direction and 20 m depth along the NS direction.
 Based on the test result, the mean resistivity of the soil at each test location is as follows:

S No. ERT No. Mean Resistivity of Soil (Ohm-m)

1 ERT 1 43.88
2 ERT 2 112.30

 Percolation rate of soil is 1.2 min / mm.

 Heavy compaction and CBR Test results are as under:

Tested Heavy Compaction test 4 day Soaked CBR value (%)

TP/PT 3 1.0 1.91 13.9 8.13 7.63 8.0

 Maximum Dry density of soil varies from 1.79 to 1.91 g/cc and Optimum Moisture Content (OMC) varies from 13.9 %
to 15.4 %.
 4-day soaked CBR value varies from 6.65 to 8.13 %. CBR value of minimum 6.0 % can be considered for design
purposes.
