How does sportsmanship relate to understanding oneself?

Sportsmanship and understanding the self, how are they intertwined? Sportsmanship is
defined as the ethical conduct of player toward others, this involves respect and self control.
Cheating and doping is one those doing that make a player unsportmanship. While the essence
of the understanding the self is analyzing ones emotion and action and learn from those to
make a decision and behaviour that guides them.

In this essay, I will explore How does sportsmanship relate to understanding oneself
using personal experience and some sports. Sportsmanship is one of the crucial virtue that
athlete must have, this includes the cooperation with teammates, opponents, coaches and
even fans. The goal of sportsmanship is not to win but to play fairly, respect the game and the
player, acceptance of lose and showing good behaviour. Atletes build relationship with others,
make friend, gain a purpose and fulfillment.

Sportsmanship is not just playing fair, it is all about being fair. This is where the
understanding the self come in. Because athlete analyze their emotion, intention and attitude
with others and how to act in a good way. This process of self reflections are very crucial in
understanding the self, because it help us, specifically athletes to become aware of their
strengths and weakness, goal and happiness that also align at their values and beliefs.

So, In how way does sportsmanship relate to understanding the self? First on the list, by
recognizing ones emotion and limitation, the athletes can avoid negative behaviour such as
cheating, unsportsmanlike conduct or disrespecting others. Sport does include stress, we know
that emotion is the outcome of stress. That is why sometimes athletes burst in emotion while In
the game, this is due to the build up stress. I can tell because I’ve been there, by simply playing
video games which is considered now a sport, in the name of E sport ( Electronic Sport ). There
is some instance that the opposite team is so good that makes the game stressful and exciting.
Winning is some achievement you might dream, but losing has its negative effect. All those
buildup stress will eventually burst out, it might lead to toxicity or unsportsmanlike. Such as
trash talking and fault finder. Overall, analyzing owns emotion and limitation can lead to a
better action and behaviour.

Secondly, sportsmanship provides a platform for athletes to test and develop their self-
awareness, empathy, and ethical reasoning skills in real-life situations. By facing challenges and
dilemmas, athletes can learn from their mistakes, confront their values, and deepen their
understanding of themselves and others. An example of this is like me playing badminton, I
usually blame my partner for not hitting the shuttlecock and will eventually loss the interest to
continue the game. But I always remember that I must show understanding that we are still a
beginner and he and I are still grasping the game. I am aware that with continuous practice we
can easily grasp this game badminton, so instead of blaming him, I encourage her to play with
me every time there is a chance. Overall, with ethical reasoning and empathy we can learn from
our own mistake and action to replace it with good ethical conduct.

Atletes who understand themselves better are more likely to endure stress and conflicts
and to fight back, knowing their strengths, passion and goals. They are also more likely to have
positive relationships with others, set realistic expectations, and pursue meaningful goals that
align with their values and principles.

In conclusion, sportsmanship and understanding oneself are interconnected concepts

that contribute to personal and social growth and development. By practicing sportsmanship,
athletes can embody virtues such as fairness, respect, and integrity, and develop essential skills
and attitudes that are useful in sports and beyond. By understanding oneself, athletes can
become aware of their strengths, passions, and goals, and align their actions with their values
and beliefs.
