1. DDT is a common insecticide. Calculate the number of atoms in 134.0 grams of

DDT. The formula of DDT is C 14H9Cl5. (3 marks)

134.0/354.48 = 0.378
0.378 x 6.02x10^23= 2.275x10^23

Therefore the number of atoms in 134g of DDT is 2.275x10^23.

2. Calculate the percent composition of phosphoric acid (H3PO4)? (3 marks)

%H = 3(1.01)/ 98 x100% = 3.09%

%P = 30.97/98 x 100% = 31.60%
%O2 = 4(16) x 100% = 65.31%

Therefore Hydrogen 3.09%, phosphorus 31.60%, and Oxygen 65.31%

3. A compound contains 40.0% carbon, 6.70% hydrogen and 53.3% oxygen by mass.
What is the empirical formula of the compound? (4 marks)

Species % mass mass % / MM of Species Divide smallest value from 3rd column Smallest ratio

C 40.0% 40.0/12.01g/mol=3.33mol 3.33/3.33= 1.00 1

H 6.70% 6.70/1.01g/mol= 6.63mol 6.63-3.33 = 1.99 2

O 53.3% 53.3/16.00g/mol= 3.33mol 3.33/3.33= 1.00 1

Therefore the empirical formula is CH2O.

4. Write a balanced chemical equation for the complete combustion of propane (C3H8).
(2 marks)

C3H8 + 5O2 → 3CO2 + 4H2O Carbon dioxide + Water
