Chapter: CONTROL VALVE DESIGN / Liquid flow
Table gives relative flow capacities of various types of control valves. This is a rough guide to use
in lieu of manufacturer's data. The liquid sizing formula is Cv=Q*sqrt(G/ΔP), where Cv=liquid
sizing coefficient, Q=flow rate in gpm, ΔP=body differential pressure, psi, G=sg (water at 60 oF =1)
Relative Flow Capacities of Control Valves (*)
Valve type Cv/d^2 Cv/d^2 (Fp) Cv/d^2 (Fl)

Single - seat sreamlined angle (FtC) 26 20 13
90 deg open butterfly (average) 32 21.5 18
Note: d=valve dia, in
This table may serve only as a rough guide because actual flow capacities differ between manu -
facturer's products and individual valve sizes.
Fp : valve installed between pipe reducers (pipe dia = 2 x valve dia)
Fl : critical (choked) flow conditions
