Let’s Explore
Critical Media Viewing
The conversation between Paul and James that you read earlier will help you
be a smart viewer. Given the wide access everyone has on the internet and various
media platforms, fake news and false information are widely spread. If you think the
information you found is questionable, it is always good to ask the advice of your
parents, guardians, and teachers. Also, seek information from reliable websites. Plus,
it is also good to check the date when the information was released.
As we stay at home, we encounter various forms of media which serve as
sources of information. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines media as a “medium
of expression”. They are ways by which information can be transferred to a particular
receiver or audience.
The internet, radio, and TV, among others, happen to offer a lot of media text
types. To ensure the validity of the information, we use triangulation.
Triangulation is checking three or more sources to make sure that the
information you see is true. Let us try to examine these common text types:
Movie Clip: A scene from a movie which excites and captures the attention
of viewers. This is usually done through revealing a secret, providing
confrontation, and solving a major problem or conflict.
Trailer: Also called teaser or preview. Usually, before a movie is released,
a trailer is created and shown to the audience to encourage them to watch
it in the cinema. A trailer shows exciting parts of the movie with a voice-
over and background music.
Newsflash: A quick report that is given in the middle of an ongoing program
because of its important content. A newsflash usually contains breaking
news, announcements or even developing stories.
Internet-based program: A program which purpose is to entertain, to inform,
to encourage, and to inspire. It is found in the internet through a particular
website.
Documentary: A report which presents an issue which is supported by
research evidence.
Let’s Elaborate

is being described. Write your answer on a short bond paper. Make sure
to put label which indicates that you are answering this part of the
