● State how even students (especially students) are dominated by social media
● However is social media really a media that the students are supposed to be using?
● According to (data), social media helps through (get information from interviews).
● This can be seen through the respondents (insert certain statements that fit)
● Additionally (positive stuff about social media, can be from interview or just general
knowledge)
● Negative effects
With the advancement of our society comes the advancement of technology. And with
the advancement of technology comes the advancement of different platforms, specifically,
social media platforms. It became a great approach to spread advocacies, information, and news
that assists the unity of everyone all around the world. It even became an alternative news
broadcasting media to inform a wide range of people easily. If we go back to 20 years ago, these
kinds of stuff are only open to adults, or more likely, these kinds of stuff only interest adults.
However, nowadays, even students–especially students–are dominated by social media. This
became even more prominent after the great pandemic where youth became so wildly exposed to
the internet, as it even became a part of their education. However is social media really a media
that the students are supposed to be using?
According to most of our interviewees, social media’s main purpose is to connect each
and every person around the globe. This can be through chatting, posting, or simply commenting.
Additionally, social media could also be used as a form of entertainment. Basically, social media
benefits us in a lot of ways such as to keep us informed and aware of societal and/or political
issues, or by simply keeping ourselves out of boredom. So, the answer is yes. Social media is
indeed very useful, and if used correctly, could be the most powerful weapon for generations.
Still, social media, as a source of information, needs a lot of analytical and critical
observation from reliable and trusted sources. This is a must in order to clarify the accuracy of
the information being issued. It's a hustle, since you need to ensure if the information you
received was actually true, especially during these times where a lot of fake news are very
common in social media. One more thing, excessive use of social media causes distractions for
students especially if they’re using it for entertainment purposes. And worse, it could lead to an
unhealthy addiction. And it’s kind of hard to imagine but a lot of people make use of us students
in order to do something harmful whether to ourselves or others via trends; for example dares,
pranks, and etc.
Basically, social media is a lot heavier topic than most of us assumed. And even the
topics that are being circulated are not light either. Take the Palestine-Israel war, for example, it
is being circulated throughout every platform, be it TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, you name it. And
sure, students should know about these, but not to the point where they have to witness actual
footage of bombings, killings, and violence. But still, this doesn’t change the fact that social
media is a great way to share information to the general public. So indeed, students who
frequently visited social media tended to have known more information about recent news,
specifically, the Palestine-Israel war. Meanwhile, those who rarely visited it tended to have
known less information about it. This then showed that social media is an effective platform for
broadcasting such issues (again, if used correctly).
As Lorraine Grace Ortega of HUMSS 11-Agoncillo had said, “Social media is a double-
edged sword, requiring reading comprehension, media literacy, and critical thinking to
effectively use it for its intended purpose.”
