Unit 10 Photo Camp

Rainier Get down low on the ground and photograph. Get up high, like up here, and
shoot down.
Narrator These are some of the best photographers in the world.
Deghati Don’t move, don’t move.
Narrator They are working with young people who haven’t used cameras before.
Deghati She’s so happy to see how it’s working.
Student Yeah! So happy.
Woman Take one of Justin.
Narrator These young people are refugees. They live in Uganda. They are from many
parts of Africa, but right now, this camp is their only home. They don’t know
what will happen to them in the future. They speak many different languages.
But award-winning National Geographic photographer Reza Deghati believes
they can all understand the meaning of powerful images.
Deghati Now, I don’t speak your language, but I use photography like language, and
this is the pictures I take.
Narrator Reza, and National Geographic photographers Ed Kashi and Chris Rainier…
Rainier That’s a very good shot.
Narrator … have joined South African photographer Neo Ntsoma. They are teaching 60
young refugees how to tell the stories of their lives in photographs.
Deghati This is the way that we say, “telling the stories by picture.” What is important
for me? What is the good, what is the bad around me? That’s how I use the
photography.
Narrator The photographers call this photo camp.
Deghati Photography is more than just having pictures of your friends standing together.
Narrator In small groups, the young people learn to use cameras and to compose
pictures.
Deghati This is more reflections off the trees and this… what you can get.
Narrator Photo camp is an inspiration for many of the camp residents. Aganze Grace, for
example, wants to become a professional photographer. He hopes to take
portraits and passport pictures to help support his family.
Deghati You are great! You can be a good photographer.
Narrator Life is difficult in the refugee camp. But Reza and the other photographers are
showing these young adults how to see their temporary home in a new way,
and perhaps to create something meaningful while they are here. Near the end
of the program, the students have an exhibition. They are excited to show their
work. As Reza explained to them at the beginning, their pictures tell stories that
everyone can understand, no matter where they are from or what language they
speak. These students received more than just a certificate and a new skill at
photo camp.
Ntsoma Wave your certificates!
Narrator They also learned how to document their world and to see themselves and their
lives in new ways.
