IV. PROCEDURES
A. Preparatory  Review about separating mixture through
Activities sieving/sifting. Let the pupils recall the benefits of
separating mixtures through sieving/sifting
 Unlocking of Difficulty (Through decoding or picture
clue)
1. winnow
B. Motivation 1. What can you say about the
picture? What method is used to
separate the mixture? Can you tell
why people use that method to
separate the mixture?
2. Presentation of the lesson:
Enumerate and describe the
Benefits of separating mixture
Through winnowing.
C. Activity 1. Divide the class into two groups.
2. Let the norms to follow during group activity.
3. Distribute activity cards.
4. Group Activity: Benefits of Separating Mixtures
through winnowing (Pls. refer Attachment No. 1)
5. Teacher supervises the activity per group
D. Analysis Answer the questions:
1. What happen to the chaff and rice as you do the
winnowing?
2. What method is being presented in the activity?

3. What do you feel upon doing the activity?
4. What do you think is the benefit of winnowing in separating
mixture?
E. Abstraction Winnowing is the method in which heavier components
of the mixture are separated from the lighter substances with
the help of wind. This method is used for separating grains
from husk after the process of threshing. In winnowing the
mixture is allowed to fall from the height. The lighten
components get separated from the heavier ones because of
the wind. It is used to separate lighter husk from heavier
grains like wheat.
The benefits of winnowing
1. Convenient, easy, and you don’t need any machines
2. Less cost in production- By the use of winnowing,
farmers no need to buy machines to separate grain
from chaff.
3. Easier to teach- This method doesn't require high level
skills, it can be practice by anyone.
4. Environment friendly- This doesn't use any machine
only air in the environment.
F. Application What method of separating mixtures to separate the chaff from your
newly harvested rice grains? (winnowing) Does it give importance to
our farmers? Why? (Yes, because through winnowing the chaffs
would be separated from the grain, thus quality rice they may
produce?
G. Practical Applications of Your sister bought 10 kilos of rice from the market. When she
Concepts and Skills in Daily arrived home she found out that the rice she bought has impurities.
Living It contents chaffs in it. What will you do? (separate the chaffs from
the rice)How? (by using a winnow) Why? (because through
winnowing some impurities can be separated and make the rice
pure.)
F. Generalization 1. What are the benefits of separating mixture through
winnowing? (Pls. refer your answer from abstraction art)
2. Describe the benefits of winnowing in the community.
Through winnowing no need for the farmers to buy machines
to separate grains from chaff of the rice harvest).
Answer the questions using the picture at
G. Evaluation your left. (5 pt.)

b. Give the benefits of winnowing in
separating mixture? (ans. a. winnowing, b.

Procedure:
Put the rice on the winnower. Do the winnowing so that the rice and the chaff
will be separated. Do it several times until the rice is clear already with chaff.
