SCIENCE 6

FIRST QUARTER
WEEK 4
DAY 2

I. OBJECTIVES:

A. CONTENT STANDARDS:
The learners demonstrate understanding of the different types of
mixtures and their characteristics.

B. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
The learners should be able to separate desired materials from
common and local products.

C. LEARNING COMPETENCY:
Enumerate techniques in separating mixtures
(S6MT-Id-f-2)

Contextualized Objective;
Describe how to separate mixtures through winnowing.
(DHLTM IV & VIII)

II. CONTENT

IV. LEARNING TASKS

A. Engagement

1. Show to the class the picture below.

2. The teacher solicits ideas from the learners about the picture using Tablet
Computers through the Application: Padlet.

Ask: What do you think they are doing? Why is it necessary to separate
the hull from the milled rice as what is shown in the picture?

3. Present the lesson.

In today’s activity, you will separate mixtures by winnowing.

2
B. Exploration

1. Divide the class into 3 groups and do the activity.

Activity 1
Let’s Do the Winnow

Materials

Group 1: Rice and Rice Hull

Group 2: Mongo Seeds and Mongo Pods
Group 3: Broken Cacao Beans and Shells

Procedures:

1. Each group will be given a mixture.

2. The teacher will demonstrate the proper way of winnowing.
3. Members of the group will do the winnowing until mixture has been
separated thoroughly.

C. Explanation

1. Have the group representative present the result of the activity.

2. Check the group responses to the activity questions:
a. What did you do with the mixture?
b. How did you separate the mixture?
c. What happened to the mixture after winnowing?
3. Have them report.
4. Clarify misconception when needed.

Winnowing is another way to separate mixtures. It is the process of freeing

(grain) from the lighter particles of chaff and dirt especially by throwing it into the air
and allowing the wind or a forced current of air to blow away impurities.
Winnower is a tool used in this process of separating mixtures called
winnowing.

3
D. Elaboration

1. The teacher presents a video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AxxyAKTZ-g and let the learners answer
the questions that follow:
a. Where do you think the activity happened?
b. Have you experienced or observed such activity in your
neighborhood?
c. How do you feel about it?

2. Teacher gives additional information about the lesson.

Winnowing is the method in which heavier components of mixture are

separated from the lighter substance with the help of the wind. This method is used
in separating grains from husk after the process of threshing.

3. Value Integration: What will you do with the impurities/chaff/hulls that are
separated from the part of the mixture that are usable?
E. Evaluation

1. In your own words, describe briefly how winnowing is done in separating

mixtures.

V. ASSIGNMENT

Practice separating mixture at home through winnowing.
