Session Guide: Strategies for Working with Diverse Learners
Duration of the Session: 2 hours
Key Understanding to be -Differentiated instruction can engage different types of learners. The term refers to
Developed presenting knowledge and instructions differently – either to different groups or in
several ways. This might mean explaining the activity to the whole class and then
providing a practical demonstration or distributing written instructions which you then
also briefly explain.
‘Scaffolding’ is a way to help students through a task. It refers to providing instruction
that supports the learning needs of the individual and encourages them towards
becoming more independent. Some examples of scaffolding include guided notes,
visual aids, discussing difficult vocabulary before presenting a new text or offering a
pre-planned study guide to aid revision. Any form of support that helps a learner to
understand the instructions and complete the task in the most independent way is a
form of scaffolding. The ultimate aim with this technique is to eventually completely
remove the scaffolding and allow every member of the class to work independently –
laying the foundation for further and higher education study.
-Make an IEP cheat sheet
-Encourage active learning
-Embrace small group and learning stations
-Group by learning style, not ability
-Promote project-based learning
-Incorporate ed-tech and adaptive learning tools
-Provide alternative testing options
Learning Objectives By the end of the session, the teachers are expected to:
1. Understand various strategies to be used for diverse learners.
2. Explain / discuss effective and engaging strategies for diverse learners.
3. Reflect through watching a short film.
4. Perform a short role play that shows various strategies that can be used for particular
group of learners.

Activity Let the participants explain the meaning of diverse learners based on their own
perspectives.
Show a short film, let the participants reflect on the video.
Differentiate strategies for diverse learners, how do they relate and differ?
Perform a short role play based on the given situation.
Analysis Short discussion on the role play performed.
Abstraction Why is it important to know / update our knowledge regarding various strategies for
diverse learners? How will it affect our teaching?
Application Ask the participants about the importance of understanding effective strategies for
diverse learners in our teaching career?
Concluding Activity Reflect on the passage “Every child is gifted. They just unwrapped their packages at
different ways and times.”

Minutes

Leuteboro Elementary School conducted the In-Service Training Workshop 2018, it all started
with a short prayer led by Mrs. Lourdes G. Bautista. It was then followed by the first speaker Mrs.
Shirley P. Magtibay, the school principal. She discussed what the 21 st century learners need to know. A
21st century learner must be: 1.values oriented. Teachers are responsible in developing her pupil’s
character, this should be strengthen and must be started at the very beginning of every class. 2. A 21 st
century learner must also be competent in communication. Pupils should learn to speak and
communicate with confidence, especially during class discussions. Pupil’s comprehension must also be
developed through practice. They should also be computer literate, at least the basics in operating a
computer. Since they are so called 21 st century learners they must be critical thinker, they must learn
how to answer and raise critical questions. Teachers must make sure that every pupil is literate enough
in all subject areas being taught all throughout the school year. And lastly, they must be work oriented,
they should know and must have enough knowledge of the common works in their own community.
Ma’am Shirley Magtibay also shared what she have learned from the recently conducted PESPA
training held at Davao City. The highlights were the following: wearing of proper uniforms in teachers is
mandatory, 3 consecutive absences of a teacher or personnel without formal leave is subject for
administrative case, a female teacher is allowed to get pregnant inspite of having no husband, as much
as possible all pupils must be a reader, teachers should maximize their prepared instructional materials,
IMs are not made for display only, they are created primarily for pupils’ learning, there are teachers who
do excellent instructional materials but failed when it comes to teaching, there are also three types of
employees, the rock star that should be imitate by many, the expectator, the zombies and the tanks.
Morality should be observed among teachers. Cases which involves the teacher and the pupil must be
settled in school or in Division Office and not in Barangays, if you are a leader do not expect everyone
to love or to like you, be an ice cream vendor if you want to be loved by many. The more the critics you
have, the more effective and efficient leader you are. The second speaker was Ma’am Ronelyn O.
Salaya who discussed the importance of English and the use of ICT in teaching. English is used to
communicate with other people all over the world, it is the only language that is understood by many
that is the reason why it is considered as a universal language. Teachers shared their best practices
that they use in teaching English in their classrooms. Ma’am Sofia Magtibay discussed the different
strategies and techniques that can be used in teaching Science. These techniques make teaching
Science easier. The last speaker was Ma’am Hazel M. Ramos, she discussed canteen report and
feeding program. Due to insufficient time yesterday she will continue her topic about WINS today.
Thank you.

assessment, validation, translating the result and recognition. Madam Shy suggested
that it was the initiative by each teacher to make her toilet clean and safe. Each toilet
must have a hand towel. Teachers must avoid favoritism in cleaning the CR, poor and
rich pupils must do their assigned task. Second speaker was Ma’am Concepcion M.
Ingco, wherein she discussed about Pagtuturo ng Pagbasa sa Primary. She emphasized
about teaching the sound of each letter then a picture must be shown before introducing
the any word. Teachers must make sure that her pupils follow the appropriate steps in
reading. Not all the times you are going to unlock words to the pupils, unlock only the

Kailangang malinis at magamasan
