INQUIRY LESSON PLAN FOR WEEK 6 ENDING FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2023

SUBJECT: MATH
TOPIC: Solving Equation
CLASS: 7TH GRADE
DURATION: 45 MINUTES
NUMBER IN CLASS: 4
SEX: MIXED
SEMESTER: 1ST
QUARTER: 1ST
TEACHER: MR. CHRIS ORYA
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to;
i. Use distributive property to evaluate expression.
ii. Solve equation with variables.
iii. Solve equation using addition and subtraction.
LEARNING RESOURCES: PRE-ALGEBRA (McDougal Little)
REFERENCES:
ENTRY BEHAVIOUR: Learners are familiar with translating algebraic expression.
PRESENTATION

INTRODUCTION: Teacher begins his lesson with a narration; you and a friend are
going on a camping trip. You each buy a backpack that costs $90 and a sleeping bag
that costs $60. What is the total cost of the camping equipment?

Method 1. Find the cost of one backpack and one sleeping bag. Then multiply the
result by 2, the number of each item bought.

Total cost = 2(90 + 60)

= 2 (150)

= 300/.,

Method 2: Find the cost of two backpacks and the cost of two sleeping bags. Then add
the total costs.

Total cost = 2(90) + 2(60)

= 180 + 120

= 300
STEP 2:

The teacher explains to the learners that the method 2 illustrates the distributive
property for evaluating the product of a number and the sum or difference. He further
writes out the distributive property principal.

Algebra: a(b + c) = ab + ac Numbers: 4(6 + 3) = 4(6) + 4(3)

(b + a)a = ba + ca (6 + 3)4 = (6(4) + 6(3)

a(b – c) = ab – ac 5(7 – 2) = (5(7) – 5(2)

(b – c)a = ba - ca (7 – 2)5 = 7(5) – 2(5)

The teacher gives two more examples and asks the learners to attempt them with his
guidance.

Guided Practice: Pre-Algebra Textbook

STEP 3:

The teacher identifies and explains parts of an expression and as well guides them on
how to simplify variable expressions. he writes an algebraic expression on the board
and explains the various parts as shown below.

The variables are x and y

The coefficient in the expression above are 2 and 4. They usually multiply a
variable

The terms are -2x, 4y, -9

The constant is -9
Example 1:
Simplify 2 ( x−4 ) + 9 x +1

2 ( x−4 ) +9 x +1=2 x−8+9 x +19 x+ 1

¿ 2 x +9 x−8+1
¿ 11x −7

Example 2:
During your workout, you spent a total of 45minutes jogging and swimming. You burnt
14 calories per minute when jogging and 8 calories per minute when swimming.
a) Let j be the time you jog (in minutes). Write an expression in terms of j for the
total calories burnt during your workout.
b) Find the total number of calories burnt if you jog for 20minutes.
14 j+ 8 ( 45− j )=14 j+360−8 j
¿ 14 j−8 j+360 Solution
¿ 6 j+360
a)

b) 6 j+360=6 ( 20 ) +360=480 calories
