Chemistry

Topic: Air pollution

Grade: 7th
Aims
A student learns about the types, sources and effects of air pollution and how to
prevent them.
Fulfilled requirements from the core curriculum
A student:
• lists the basic sources and types of air pollution
• determines the effects of air pollution
• gives examples of substances harmful to the environment
• explains the concepts of greenhouse effect, ozone, smog
• describes the formation of the ozone hole and acid rain
• gives some ways to counteract unfavorable changes taking place in the air

Methods of work:
Causerie, work with a textbook, presentation, OUTDOOR

Teaching materials and resources

Textbook for grade 7, solid pollution testing kit, multimedia board, laptop,
presentation prepared by students

Stages of the lesson:

1. The teacher introduces the topic of the lesson and explains its goals.
2. Reference to previous lessons, reminder of the composition of air.
3. Explaining the concept of air pollution, students indicate the sources of
pollution.
4. Division of pollutants according to their physical state.
5. Presentation entitled "Air pollution".
6. Students leave the classroom and read the air condition on the monitor (from
a sensor outside the school).
7. Students check whether solid contaminants have accumulated on the set
prepared for this purpose (a plate smeared with cream and left outside for a few
days). Students return to the classroom.
8. Students list the effects of air pollution: smog, acid rain, the ozone hole and
the increase in the greenhouse effect. They analyze the patterns of the ozone
hole formation and the greenhouse effect presented in the textbook.
9. Film titled "The Ozone Hole" is played for students
10. Students and the teacher wonder how to protect the air from pollution.
11. Editing a note together.
12. Homework task: task 2, page 68 from the textbook.

Glossary of new terms in English (CLIL method):
