I. Read each statement or question below carefully and fill in the blank with correct answer.
___________1. the value of two variables or data are both increasing
___________2. the values of the first variable are increasing while the second values are decreasing
___________3. all values of the constant are proportion
___________4. both direct and inverse variation are applicable to create an equation
___________5. it has two direct variation

II. Create an equation using the following statement of variation and identify what kind of variation the
following are given.
1. The variable Y is varies directly to the variable X.
2. H is jointly proportional to the variable I and J.
3. Variable W is varies inversely to the variable Z.
4. B is varies directly to C but inversely to Y.
5. The variable M is varies jointly to the variable N and P.

III. Solve the following problem of variations. (2 pts.)

1. If a car runs at a constant speed and takes 3 hrs to run a distance of 180 km, what time it will take to run
100 km?
2. The volume VV of a gas varies inversely as the pressure PP on it. If the volume is 240 cm3240
cm3 under pressure of 30 kg/cm230 kg/cm2 , what pressure has to be applied to have a volume of 160
cm3160 cm3 ?
3. When looking at two buildings at the same time, the length of the buildings’ shadows (s) varies directly
as their height (h). If a 5-story building has 20 meters long shadow, how many stories high would a
building that has 32 m long shadow be?
4. The area of a rectangle varies jointly as the length and the width, and A = 64 square inches when l = 12
inches and w = 2 inches. Find the area of the rectangle whose length is 15 inches and whose width is 4
inches.
5. z varies jointly with x and y. If x=3,y=8, and z=6, find the variation equation. Then, find z when x=−2
and y=10.
