Workplace Safety

1. Title:

To study the importance of safety at workplace.

2. Problem Statement:

A safe work environment is a productive one. No matter the size or type of the business, workplace
safety procedures are a necessity for all staff. Safety measures protect employees as well as
equipment and business property. Avoiding or minimizing injuries and damage to equipment and
facilities will result in fewer expenses and more profit for a business. It is therefore required to
familiarize the students with the significance of safety and safety protocols while in laboratory for
doing some assignment in order to avoid any mishap in the future.

3. Objective:

To understand the safety protocols of various equipments present in the laboratories.

4. Theory:

4.1. Significance of Safety:

Workplace safety is very important for each and every employee in the industry because all the
workers desire to work in a safe and protected atmosphere. Health and safety is the key factor for
all the industries in order to promote the wellness of both employees and employers. It is a duty
and moral responsibility of the company to look after the employee’s protection.

International Labor Organization (ILO) reports indicate that while 2.2 million people die every
year due to work-related accidents or illnesses, more than 270 million workers are injured and an
estimated 160 million suffer work-related illnesses.

4.2. Workplace Injuries:

If an organization don’t bother about the safety of its employees or employee itself doesn’t follow
the safety protocols while at work, then it may result in serious injuries that can lead to
handicapping or death. Common reasons for workplace injuries includes the following.

 Not aware of the surroundings

 Do not using the tools appropriately
 Emergency exits are not present or not easily accessible
 A lot of workplace environment stress
 Not wearing the right safety equipment’s

5. Safety Signs:

Different workplace safety signs are displayed according to the nature of the working environment.
But some of the signs are common and displayed most of the time to keep the people working
there or any outsider safe by educating familiarizing them with the surrounding environment and
possible hazards/accidents that can be happened. Some of them are described as below.
5.1. Evacuation Plan
Evacuation plan let the people know which route is to follow to reach the safe assembly area in
case any emergency happens.

5.2. Emergency Exit:

Emergency exit signs are displayed at various places inside the building to locate the route to the
assembly area.

5.3. Assembly Area:

Assembly area is the place where people assemble in case any emergency happens and it ensures
all the people reach to that area.

6. To Do Assignment:

Observe and study the safety protocols adopted in the department and complete the lab report
as per the study questions given below.
a. Write down the safety protocols of any three equipments (with its name, general
description and picture) available in the welding lab?
