Activity No. 5 Reflection Paper

It cannot be denied that many have already changed in the Philippines from the time Dr. Rizal
wrote “The Philippines: A Century Hence”. Nonetheless, it is equally true that up to this very
day, there are still a lot of compelling issues to be addressed as a nation. What reforms do you
think are necessary for us to attain the societal transformation that we are longing for? (You can
cite at least 2). Please be mindful of the substance and clarity of your work. 20 points.

It is very true that we are now living most of the forecasts of Dr. Jose Rizal in his book,
“The Philippines: A Century Hence”. However, despite the major changes that happened to the
Philippines from Dr. Rizal’s time to our current time, I could still see some issues that continue
to linger in our country to this day. The first issue that I could still see to this day that Dr. Rizal
had wish to be gone is the injustice that continues to happen in the country. I know that the
injustice that some Filipinos experience today is nowhere compared to the injustices that the
Filipinos experienced during Dr. Rizal’s time, but isn’t it contradicting that a country that has
long declared as a free country, continues to experience injustice in is society? The best solution
that I could think of to address this problem is for the government to emphasize and exercise fair
treatment to all the people. It sounds like an unrealistic feat, but I believe that if the country is
united in achieving true freedom against oppression, it is more than possible that the country
could eliminate injustice among the society. Another issue that I see that continues to exist
during our time is that the Philippines continues to be bullied by more powerful countries.
Despite declaring independence, a long time ago, I could still see how some powerful countries
continue to treat the Philippines as a lower-class country. I know that the kind of oppression that
the Philippines faced before was more brutal than what the Philippines is facing now, but I still
could not see the country being able to exercise the full independence that it has. The best
possible solution, that I could think of, for the Philippines to address this problem is for the
country to stop heavily relying on more powerful countries, but instead learn how to capitalize
and use the natural resources that the country has, instead of having other countries abuse it in
exchange of their minimal help.
