THE PHILIPPINES A CENTURY HENCE

I. Give 2 important ideas discussed in the following parts of the essay. (8 points)

A. The Past
The revisit of the past has exposed issues concerning the Philippines, as the people remained to be faithful to
Spain, the Philippines has lost, declined, and degrade themselves of what was their own. Consequently, the foreign has
implemented policies which cause the withering of the society, deterioration and disappearance of culture as the
natives accepted and become submissive to the “fate”. Still, not the entire Filipinos accepted the sufferings yielding to
regain the spirit of salvation. Though may only be evident in a few, such aspiration for change of system enable the
Filipinos to be awakened as national consciousness and desire for a change in their way of life progress. Hence, Spain
has no means of preventing the progress of the country but rather should change its policies so to coincide with the
needs of the Philippines and to the rising nationalism of the people.
B. The Present
As such oppression continues to happen; the sensitivity of the people has enabled to seek freedom in land,
freedom of press and to stop the abuse on human rights through peaceful negotiations. The faith in justice over the
liberty of the country gives assurance to independence. On the otherhand, being discouraged and disillusioned by the
past will result to imprisonment due to the experience. At the sight of modern liberties, the advancement and moral
progress of the Philippines is inevitable; enlightenment is spreading and accelerates as persecution resumes. Moreover,
one cannot remain in present condition without having the necessary changes. Instead of preventing its progress, the
forms of peaceful evolution should be examined in a manner where the dignity of both countries is secured.
C. Required Reforms
The necessary changes require reforms. The Philippines will remain under the Spain if she enters upon the life of
law and civilization where rights of the natives are granted and respected and the liberal policy of the government is
being carried out without false interpretation. The political transformation will enable evolution and to coincide with the
needs of the people. Moreover, the freedom of press ensures a direct ground where truth and facts are within the reach
of every possible channel. Also, such reforms should not be limit to being ordered but to produce results.
D. The Future
The reforms either being promulgated or ignored unveils different possibilities. Any possible future may happen
depending on better probabilities or imperceptible and incomprehensible logic. Still, whatever the future holds the
people and the government should desire for adjustments. The anticipation of the people mirrors the spark of hope on
redemption. As long as one endures, perseveres and acts justly, the deserved future awaits.

II. Based on what is happening at present, what do you see as the future of the Philippines in 20 years? Elaborate
your discussion based on the following aspects: (9 points)

A. Political Aspect
The government continues to develop and address the needs of the country. With the current situation
intensified by the past regimes, the Philippines seek for change of systems. With that being said, the people are getting
more involved especially the youth who voices out their concerns in the future of the political system. As the population
increases, the government has a fundamental role on national development and ensuring the inclusivity and
sustainability of the society. Philippines considered as a democratic republic should maximize every means on delivering
the benefits of democracy. Being more knowledgeable and taking an integral engagement on addressing corruption,
criminality, and political dynasty or any political issues may hold a brighter future for the Philippines.
B. Economic Aspect
The Philippines being identified as a newly industrialized country which has an economy transition on agriculture
and other services such as manufacturing will be continuously addressed. However as time progresses, the future of the
country in terms of economic development may not exponentially increase as long as major economic problems such as
poverty, unemployment and inflation are not properly addressed; the Philippines will struggle to utilize its resources. For
an instance, the agricultural industry is declining due to lack of subsidies, competing land use, disenchantment in
pursuing a career in agriculture, and other longstanding issues. The promotion of sustained economic growth with
higher levels of productivity and technological innovation will help in raising the growth of the economy.
C. Social Aspect
The individuals in the society are the domain of change. The Filipinos especially the youth who will be the integral
people of the future are being well-aware of the challenges present today. Even with the distinctive blend of diversity
and homogeneity, the Philippines will have inclusive and sustainable communities in the future. The people of the
Philippines are currently being positive agents who promote equality, non-discrimination, dignity and respect towards
every created being. As long as the sensitivity, openness and understanding towards differences remain, the future in
social aspect will not be at stake.
1. As a whole, do you project a positive or negative future for the country? Why? (3 points)

a. If positive, what present indicators do you see that will result to this?
b. If negative, what can be done to prevent it?

The growing interests and involvement in addressing problems indicate a positive future for the Philippines. The
youth are finding each bigger “selves” to create a bigger venue for change. As such being the domain of change, each
serves a bridging leader who bridges social divides while expanding each tool kit of understanding which serves as an
advantage in creating the future. Evidently, the faith in people through interconnectedness and interdependence are
proficient factors towards building inclusive and sustainable communities. The Filipinos are slowly limiting the spread of
indifference which fuels up systematic oppression towards other people. Moreover, the continuous dialogues with
different concerns amidst the blend of diversity and homogeneity manifest the awareness and serves as a fundamental
step of the people towards building a positive future.
