Scribe:
The image shows a stereotypical family from the 1950’s showcasing gender roles which were
common at the time. It is an advertisement for beer that pokes fun at the fact that although the
wife is depicted to be bad at cooking, she can’t possibly burn the beer. The ad also tries to sell
their product by saying that their beer can substitute the ruined meal.

Analysis: (Rhetorical situation)

Grant-Davie defines an advertisement as sponsored and that the ads are made for specific
purposes. The advertisement fits into the words of Grant-Davie because the showcased
advertisement was designed to showcase the harsh realities of the 1950’s average family
household by portraying the addiction to beer and the wife’s role in the house.

Exigence: to sell a product (beer)

Rhetors: The company making the beer = “An advertisement may be sponsored by a
corporation, written and designed by an advertising agency, and delivered by an actor playing
the role of corporate spokesperson” (Grant-Davie 269). = The ad also tries to sell their product
by saying that their beer can substitute the ruined meal.
Audience: people who the company is trying to sell beer to.
Constraints: if the people who they are trying to sell to do not like the taste of beer.
