(Rizal sa Dapitan)

I. Introduction:

“Rizal sa Dapitan” is a film that provides its audience with a glimpse into the life of Dr.
Jose Rizal during a period when he was compelled to remain in Dapitan. It plays a vital role in
history and covers a few chapters of Rizal’s life that have had a significant influence on Filipinos,
both in the past and in the present. The movie highlights the importance of education, a person
being adaptable to their environment, being more compassionate and caring to their neighbor
through acts of service, being knowledgeable enough, having the right amount of courage to
stick up for what they know is right, not giving up, especially when they know that they can do
anything, and lastly, loyalty and being proud of the country that they are born in.

The aforementioned lessons from this film not only resemble Rizal’s character but also
showcase perspectives on values that are applicable to different facets of society and life. The
film expresses the idea of continuing the legacy of Dr. Jose Rizal’s selflessness, compassion,
determination, and exceptional knowledge.

II. Summary of the Story:

Award-winning filmmaker Aguiluz and screenwriter Jose Lacaba's Rizal sa Dapitan

provides us a restrained portrayal of Rizal's 1892–1896 time in that little town. The performance
by Albert Martinez, who plays Rizal in the film, is undoubtedly the best. Even for individuals who
are already familiar with Rizal's life, the film might still be worthwhile.

Rizal is one of kindest people to me, Why? He left the town a place of goodness that
many will never forget because of his kindness, many have not forgotten Jose Rizal, the people
he helped in the town is just like he built a water system and there is he still planted a variety of
vegetables and fruits just to improve the daily lives of the town, that's why Padre Sanchez was
amazed by Jose Rizal for the goodness he showed to the community. Not only that this is very
important for Jose Rizal “Education” so every afternoon he teaches young children to learn
about things and to have efficient knowledge.
 This is about how Jose Rizal lived or lived in the place where he was exiled here by
those who hated him, he made many friends here because of being a good person because
during his stay there he not just become a prisoner but he also a physician, teacher,
agriculturalists who help to improve the community and all he wanted was to live quietly and be
with his family. So Rizal’s mother, Doña Teodora Alonzo and also with her sister came to dapitan
to see Jose Rizal.

The ending of the story is Dr. Jose Rizal left to Dapitan and will go to Cuba but sadly he
is not able to go in Cuba because he was arrested in Spain and he was returned to the
Philippines and sentenced to death.

III. Analysis of the plot:

The movie "Rizal in Dapitan" depicts the life of Dr. Jose Rizal, the national hero of the
Philippines, while he was living in exile in the little hamlet of Dapitan, Mindanao, Philippines. To
make the plot come to life, the movie experiments with a number of unique aspects.

1. Dialogues - The dialogues used were in deep tagalog wherein the words in their
generation were more exiled and undistinguishable compared to our generation. The
movie employed language and conversation from the era, giving the characters and their
interactions more realism. The diversity of the Philippines' cultures and languages during
the time may also be seen in the way language is used.
2. Cinematic Techniques & Costume/Set Design - The lighting was mostly in an old
static version. The creative team of the movie concentrated on making realistic sets and
 costumes that capture the era of Rizal's banishment. The costumes were exhibited as
the style of late 80’s wherein they were old fashioned and conservative to their clothing
and behavior. The audience was more fully drawn into the story due to the attention to
historical detail.
3. Mood - The mood asserts more into drama with a tone of formality in terms of being
optimistic. This makes the cinematic more engaging through the portrayal of the mood in
terms of making the right and fitted aura within each scene.
4. Soundtrack - The soundtrack or background audios that were used definitely
heightened the emotional impact of the movie. It elicited particular feelings and gave the
narrative a cultural context.
5. Character Portrayal - The way the performers play historical characters—Rizal in
particular—contributes to the film's artistic components. The subtle differences in their

In my personal perspective, Rizal's period in Dapitan stands as a significant part of the

national hero's story. Exiled to a distant town, he transformed challenges into chances for
positive transformation. Creating a school, engaging in medicine, and managing an intricate
romantic relationship, Rizal's stay in Dapitan demonstrates resilience, intellectual strength, and
a dedication to improving society despite personal and political obstacles. It serves as proof of
the lasting spirit of a forward-thinking leader who, even in exile, made a lasting impact on the
journey towards enlightenment and social justice.

1. Did you learn something from this movie? If you did, what was it?

- Well after watching this movie I’ve learned so much that we could apply to our daily lives
to help our community. Dr. Jose Rizal He did not think twice to help the place just so that
it would improve and prepare. Being a prisoner was not an obstacle for him to help and
be good to other people. He helped many people in the place which resulted in not
forgetting. People from Jose Rizal, what I learned from this show is that as long as you
can help other people, help yourself.

2. What is the message of this movie? Do you agree or disagree with it?

- I agree, the message of the movie is so really inspiring to the young people that's why
this movie is really recommendable to watch because its message to us that we should
help each other also Despite being in exile in Dapitan, Rizal managed to turn his
circumstances to his advantage. This may serve as a reminder that, despite our lifestyle
choices, we are still capable of doing anything and that we can have an impact, even in
the smallest and most straightforward ways. Like Rizal, we shouldn't confine ourselves
to a certain space. Despite being in exile, our hero was still able to accomplish good
deeds. Without boundaries, he accepted his environment. And just to summarize the
message of this story is just do good to others and love your family.

3. Was there something you didn’t understand about the film? What was that?

- None, I was able to understand the film clearly and that they were able to elaborate and
the story and details in the movie was properly discussed.

4. If you had a chance to ask a question to a character in this movie, who and what
would it be?

- If there would be a chance that I would ask one character from the movie, that would be
Rizal itself. I would definitely ask him, “How did you survive and manage to live in a
world full of judgements and discrimination?”, because in spite of the challenges and
hardships that he encountered, he was able to manage and accept those hates,
 judgements and discrimination that was given to him during that period. And even
though it happens still he helps other people.

5. What are the personal qualities of Rizal that made him overcome the struggles in
Dapitan?

- His determination and strong beliefs has piqued his problems through solving the
struggles in Dapitan. By this personality, he made changes overcoming his fears and
troubles with dealing with his issues. He is also resilient, bright, and confident with his
action taking his problems while not thinking any negative thoughts to provide his
battles.

6. What complications does the film’s protagonist face that are similar to those you
may have faced in your various struggles?

- The complications that the film’s protagonist faces that are also similar to those I may
have faced in my various struggles are having to live in a place that is far from my
hometown, family, and those close to me, adjust to a new culture, and lastly, struggle to
find a feeling of belongingness and care.

7. Of the many feelings expressed in the film, with which are you most familiar?

- While watching the video, I noticed strong emotions like love, torment, isolation, and
courage. The love story of Rizal peeks with strong emotion that shows his story
specifically within his bond with Josephine. His torment with his difficulties involving
losing a child, family matters, and dealing with the authorities.His isolation towards
making the community a better place is also expressed because he showed
self-isolation to make a good impression of his doings. Rizal’s courageousness, or his
hero act, also did well to overcome his goal to make changes in the society.

- In “Rizal sa Dapitan,” the oppressive Spanish colonial system serves as the main

above everything, Rizal enthusiastically applies his experience to help the younger
