ELECTIVE SCIENCE (GROUP ACTIVITY) 8 - CAYLEY
TO BE PASSED TO: MA’AM MARIBEL SIAO

Directions: Answer the following with a group of 4 members (group yourselves) in each group.
(5 points each item)

1. What is the importance of cell division in the life of an organism?

The division of the cell is important because it is a way for organisms to reproduce, repair any
damages, and also for growth of the organism. Cell division plays an important role in all living
organisms, as it is essential for growth, repair and reproduction. This process helps in: Renewing
of damaged cells. Production of new cells from older ones.

2. Why is resting stage an incorrect term to describe interphase?

The resting stage is the incorect term because the cell is technically not resting it is getting ready
for subdivsion and continues to work.

Interphase was formerly called the resting phase. However, interphase does not describe a cell
that is merely resting; rather, the cell is living and preparing for later cell division, so the name
was changed. A common misconception is that interphase is the first stage of mitosis, but since
mitosis is the division of the nucleus, prophase is actually the first stage.

3. Why do cells need to go through interphase before dividing?

A cell enters the interphase before it undergoes another cycle of division because it requires to
double its DNA content. Interphase is that phase of the cell cycle in which the cell grows and
duplicates its DNA before entering mitosis of another cell cycle.
Interphase is important for cell division because it allows the cell to grow, replicate its DNA, and
make final preparations for cell division, or mitosis. During G1, the cell grows and does its job in
the body and physically gets larger. During the S phase, the cell replicates its DNA.

4. What are the advantage and disadvantage of and asexual reproduction?

Asexual reproduction is the production of new individuals from a single parent. This type of
reproduction is generally observed in single-celled organisms.

A few of the advantages of asexual reproduction is that the process requires less energy, it takes
place in various environments and lastly it allows for the survival of species. Its disadvantages
are that since the offspring is an exact copy of the parent, any negative mutation will also pass on
to the offspring, there is limited diversity within life forms and rapid increasing of population.
