INTRODUCTION

Infertility is generally defined as

the inability to conceive after a
year of regular unprotected
sexual intercourse. It can also
refer to the inability to carry a
pregnancy to full term. Infertility
can affect both men and women
and may be caused by various
factors.
CAUSES
Common causes of infertility in
women include:

1. Ovulation Disorders: Issues

with the release of eggs from the
ovaries.
2. Uterine or Cervical
Abnormalities: Problems with the
structure of the uterus or cervix.
3. Fallopian Tube Damage or
Blockage: Hindering the
fertilization process.
4. Endometriosis: A condition
where tissue similar to the lining
of the uterus grows outside the
uterus.
5. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
(PCOS): A hormonal disorder
affecting ovulation.
Common causes of infertility in
men include:

1. Sperm Disorders: Issues with

sperm production, function, or
delivery.
2. Varicocele: Enlarged veins
within the scrotum.
3. Testicular Disorders: Problems
with the testicles.
4. Ejaculation Issues: Difficulties
in the process of ejaculation.
5. Genetic Factors: Inherited
conditions affecting fertility.
Treatment Options:
1. Lifestyle Changes:
 Maintaining a healthy weight.
 Avoiding excessive alcohol and tobacco
use.
 Managing stress.

2. Medications:
Fertility drugs to stimulate ovulation.
Hormonal treatments for both men and
women.

3. Surgery:
Correcting structural issues, such as blocked
fallopian tubes or varicocele in men.

4. Assisted Reproductive Technologies

(ART):
 In vitro fertilization (IVF): Fertilization
outside the body and then implantation of the
embryo.
 Intrauterine insemination (IUI): Placing
sperm directly into the uterus during
ovulation.

5. Donor Eggs or Sperm:

Using donor eggs or sperm in cases of
severe male or female infertility.

6. Surrogacy:
A surrogate carries the pregnancy for a
couple who cannot conceive or carry a
pregnancy.

7. Genetic Testing:
Pre-implantation genetic testing to screen
embryos for genetic disorders.

8. Counselling and Support:

Emotional support for couples dealing with
infertility.
IMPORTANT POINTS
1.Prevention:
 The importance of regular medical
check-ups for early detection and treatment.
 The role of a healthy lifestyle important in
preventing infertility.

2.Maintain a Healthy Weight:

 Both underweight and overweight
conditions can affect fertility. Maintaining a
healthy weight through a balanced diet and
regular exercise is essential.

3.Avoid Smoking and Excessive Alcohol

Consumption:
 Smoking and excessive alcohol intake
can negatively impact fertility in both men
and women. Quitting smoking and limiting
alcohol consumption are important
preventive measures.
4.Practice Safe Sex and Avoid Sexually
Transmitted Infections (STIs):
 Sexually transmitted infections, if left
untreated, can lead to infertility. Practice
safe sex and seek prompt treatment for any
infections.

5.Avoid Excessive Heat Exposure:

 Prolonged exposure to high
temperatures, such as in hot tubs or saunas,
can affect sperm production. Men should
avoid excessive heat exposure to the genital
area.

6.Limit Use of Lubricants:

 Some lubricants can interfere with sperm
motility. If lubrication is needed, choose
products specifically designed for fertility.

7.Family Planning and Age Consideration:

 Plan pregnancies at an age when fertility
is optimal, as fertility tends to decline with
age, especially for women.
