Q.1) A nylon thread is subjected to a 8.5 N tension force. If E = 3.3 GPa and the
length of the thread increases by 1.1 %, determine (a) the diameter of the thread, (b)
the stress in the thread.
Hint: δ/L = 1.1/100
Ans. d = 0.546 mm, σ = 36.3 MPa

Q.2) Both portions of the rod ABC are made

of an aluminum for which E = 73GPa. If the
diameter of portion BC is d = 20 mm,
determine the largest force P that can be
applied if σall = 160 MPa and the
corresponding deflection at point C is not to
exceed 4 mm.

Solution

Considering allowable stress σ = 160×106 Pa

Portion AB = (706.86 × 10 )(160 × 10 ) = 113.1 × 10 N

Portion BC = (314.16 × 10 )(160 × 10 ) = 50.3 × 10 N

Q 3) The horizontal rigid beam ABCD is

supported by vertical bars BE and CF and is
loaded by vertical forces P1 = 400 kN and P2 =
360 kN acting at points A and D, respectively
(see figure). Bars BE and CF are made of steel
(E = 200 GPa) and have cross-sectional areas
ABE = 11,100 mm2 and ACF = 9,280 mm2. The
distances between various points on the bars are
shown in the figure.
Determine the vertical displacements δA and δD
of points A and D, respectively.

Solution:
Free-Body Diagram of Bar ABCD

ABE = 11,100 mm2, ACF = 9,280 mm2, E = 200 GPa, LBE = 3.0 m, LCF = 2.4 m, P1
= 400 kN and P2 = 360 kN

(400 kN)(1.5 m) + FCF(1.5 m) - (360 kN)(3.6 m) = 0
FCF = 464 kN
ΣMC = 0
(400 kN)(3.0 m) - FBE(1.5 m) - (360 kN)(2.1 m) = 0
FBE = 296 kN

specimen 10 mm in diameter using a gage
length of 50 mm (see figure). When the
tensile load P reaches a value of 20 kN,
the distance between the gage marks has

(b) If the diameter decreases by 0.00830 mm, what is Poisson’s ratio?

Example 2.06 Determine the values of the stress

in portions AC and CB of the steel bar shown when
the temperature of the bar is -50oF, knowing that a
close fit exists at both of the rigid supports when
the temperature is +75oF. Use the values E =29 ×
106 psi and  = 6.5 × 106/oF for steel.

Example 2.3 The 1/2 -in.-diameter rod CE and the

3/4 -in.-diameter rod DF are attached to the rigid
bar ABCD as shown. Knowing that the rods are
made of aluminum and using E = 10.6 × 106 psi,
determine (a) the force in each rod caused by the
loading shown, (b) the corresponding deflection of
point A.

Example 2.4 The rigid bar CDE is attached to a

pin support at E and rests on the 30-mm diameter
brass cylinder BD. A 22-mm-diameter steel rod
AC passes through a hole in the bar and is
secured by a nut which is snugly fitted when the
temperature of the entire assembly is 20oC. The
temperature of the brass cylinder is then raised to
50oC while the steel rod remains at 20oC.
Assuming that no stresses were present before
the temperature change, determine the stress in
the cylinder.

Rod AC: Steel Cylinder BD: Brass

E = 200 GPa E = 105 GPa
 = 11.7 × 10-6/°C  = 20.9 × 10-6/°C
