DESIGN OF BEAM
1. Design Parameters
Kumax =0.46, Ptmax=0.76%, Rumax =2.66

2. Assume Suitable Depth

d=L/10 TO L/15
6000/15=400mm to 4000/10=600mm
Adopt d=400mm
∴ D=400+25=425mm
b=d/3 to 2d/3 OR width of wall/column.
Let b=230mm

3. Effective span
le=l+d or c/c distance between the supports

l+d=(6000-230)+325=6095mm
c/c distance=6000mm whichever is less.

∴ le=6000mm

4. loading
 Load from slab calculations
i. Self weight=25x.125 =3.125 kN/m2
ii. Floor finish =1.0 kN/m2
iii. Live load =3 kN/m2
Ws =7.125 kN/m2

• Load on long beam

Ws (kN / )×Area of trapezoidal portion
• =
. ×( ×( )× )
• = =8.31 kN/m
 Load on beam:-
a. Load of slab (from previous calculations) =8.31 kN/m
b. Load of wall=20x0.230x(3.0-0.35) =12.19 kN/m
c. Self weight of beam=25x0.23x0.40 =2.3 kN/m

W=22.8 kN/m
Wu=1.5x22.8=34.2 kN/m

5. Calculation of bending moment & shear forces-

For simply supported beam
Mu=wu le2/8=34.2x62/8=153.9kNm
Vu= wu le/2=34.2x6/2=102.6kN
6. Calculate Mu for balanced section

Mu bal=Rumax.b.d2 =2.66x230x4002=97.9x106Nmm=97.9kNm

7. Compare Mu with Mu bal

Mu > Mu bal

∴ Design Doubly Reinforced Section

Design doubly reinforced section
In DRS additional steel (Ast2) is provided in tension zone to resist Mu2.
Calculate Mu2
Mu2=Mu-Mu,bal =153.9-97.9=56 kNm

8. Calculate Ast
Mu1 97.9 × 10 2
Ast1= = = 697.4
0.87fy (d−0.42xumax) 0.87 × 500[400−(0.42 × 0.46 × 400)]

Mu2 56×
Ast2= = =343.3mm2
0.87fy (d−dc’) 0.87× (400−25)

Ast= Ast1 + Ast2 =697.4+343.3=1040.7mm2

Assume dia. of bar=20mm

Number of bars=3.31 Say 4 Pt=100 × = 1.36%

9. Depth of neutral axis for balanced section:-

= = 0.46 × 400 = 184

The permissible value of strain in Fe415 steel at the yield point is

= 0.0035(1 − )=0.0035[1− 184 ]=0.003

Stress level Fe500-strain

0.975fy/1.15Es 0.00311
? 0.0030
0.95fy/1.15Es 0.00276
By interpolation
fsc=0.97x500/1.15=421.74MPa
9. Calculate Asc
Asc=0.87fy Ast2/ [fsc−fcc]

Where, fcc can be neglected

Asc=0.87fy Ast2 /fsc =0.87x500x343.2/421.74
=354mm2

Assume 16mm Dia. Bar

No. of bars=354/201=1.76 Say 2
Pt=100 × = 0.44%
×
Support condition (L/d) basic
10. Check for Depth Cantilever 7

α1=Modification Factor Refer IS456-2000-page no 38, fig. 4

To calculate α1, = 0.58

Find, (Ast, req/Ast, prov)=1040.7/1256=0.83

& Pt =1.36%

f = 0.58 =240.29MPa

α1=0.9
Pt for compression steel=0.44%

α2=1.12

∴ = = =297.62mm < dprov (400mm)

( / ) ∗ ∗ × . × .

∴ safe.
11. Check for shear

Nominal shear stress τvu= Vu / b*d =(102.6x103)/(230x400)=1.11MPa

= =1.36%

1.25---0.67

1.36----?

1.5-------0.72

τc = 0.695 MPa Page 73 table 19

Compare τvu with τc & τc max

τc max =2.8 MPa

τvu > τc But τvu < τc max……………………page 73

Shear reinforcement is required in the form of vertical stirrups.

Vuc= τc *b*d =0.695x230x400=63.94x103 N…Shear strength of concrete.

Shear to be resisted by steel

Vus=Vu- Vuc =102.6-63.94=38.67 kN

Assume 2 legged 6mm dia. Vertical stirrups

0.87 fy Asv.d 0.87 x415x( × × )×
= Vus = 38.67× =211.19mm < Sv max page 73
Spacing for nominal shear reinforcement

0.87 fy Asv 0.87×415×56.55

i. Sv,max= = = 221.92 …………page 48
. . ×

ii. 0.75d=0.75x400=300mm whichever is less.

iii. 300mm

∴ Provide 2L-6mm ø vertical stirrups at 200mm c/c throughout the span.

13. Check for check for development length
