DESIGN OF ONE-WAY CONTINOUS SLAB

A hall in a building has a floor consisting of a one-way continuous slab casted monolithically with simply
supported 250 mm wide beams spaced at 4m c/c as shown in the fig. The clear span of the beam is 9m.
Assuming a live load on the slab as 3 KN/m & floor finish load as 1.5 KN/m2. Design the slab with M20
and Fe 500 grades of materials.

Fig.(a) Continuous Slab Floor Slabs

SOLUTION
Supporting Beam: Width (b) = 250 mm
Material Properties: Concrete (Fck) = 20 MPa Steel (Fy) = 500 MPa
Loading over the slab: Live Load = 3 KN/m2, Floor Finish Load = 1.5 KN/m2
Assumptions: Clear Cover = 20 mm Diameter of R/F = 10 mm
Dimension of slab: Shorter Span (Lx) = 4 m Longer Span (Ly) = 9 m

Step 01 – Type of slab

Shorter Span (Lx) 9

= = 2.25 > 2 … … … … … … … … … … … … … … Hence the slab is oneway slab
Longer Span (Ly) 4
Effective span of slab, Le = Clear span + width of supporting beam
Along shorter span, Lex = 4 + 0.25 = 4.25 m Along shorter span, Ley = 9.25 m

Step 02 – Trial depth of slab and effective span

As per IS 456-2000, Cl.23.2.1 based of deflection criteria,
Considering modification factor as Mf = 1.25
span (Lx) Lx
= 26 ⥂ d=
effective depth (d) 26 x M𝑓

4000
Therefore, effective depth (d) = = 123.076 mm
26 x 1.25
Assumed clear cover as 20 mm and diameter of bar as 10 mm
Therefore, overall depth of slab, D = 123.076 + 20 + (10/2) = 148.0769 mm
Providing overall depth, D = 150 mm
Available Eff. depth, d = 150 – 20 – (10/2) = 125 mm

Step 02 – Load Calculation

Self-weight of slab, = 25 x 0.15 = 3.75 KN/m2
Floor finish (Given) = 1.5 KN/m2 Live Load (Given) = 3 KN/m2
Total factored dead load, wud = 1.5 x (3.75 + 1.5) = 7.875 KN/m2
Total factored live load, wul = 1.5 x 3 = 4.5 KN/m2

Step 03 – Maximum Moment, Maximum Shear Force & Depth check for flexure
As per IS 456-2000, Table 12 and 13
1 1
Mmid = x wd x L ex 2 + x wl x L ex 2
12 10
1 1
Mu mid = x 7.875 x 4.25 2 + x 4.5 x 4.25 2 = 19.98 KN − m
12 10
1 1
Msupp = x wd x L ex 2 + x wl x L ex 2
10 9
1 1
Mu supp = x 7.875 x 4.25 2 + x 4.5 x 4.25 2 = 23.26 KN − m
10 9
Now finally considering maximum among both the values as design moment.
Mu max = Mu mid = 23.26 KN-m
Now maximum shear force, from table 13, considering the coefficient that will result maximum shear
force.
V max = 0.6 x (wud + wul) Lex = 0.6 x ( 7.875 + 4.5) x 4.25 = 31.556 KN

Mu 23.26 x 106
Therefore, dreq = √ = √ = 93.5 mm
0.133 x fck x b 0.133 x 20 x 1000

Where , davailable = 125 mm > dreq = 93.50 mm … . . Hence provided depth is safe

Step 04 - Design for reinforcement
(a) Along shorter span (Main Reinforcements)
0.5 x fck 4.6 Mu
Ast = [1 − √1 − ⁄ f x b x d2 ] x b x d
fy ck

0.5 x 20 6
Ast−required = [1 − √1 − 4.6 x 23.225 x 10 ⁄20 x 1000 x 1252 ] x 1000 x 125 = 471.87 mm2
500
0.12
Ast−min = x 1000 x 150 = 180 mm2
100
Now following required reinforcements as Ast-required = 471.87 mm2
Now providing T10 mm, AT = 78.54 mm2
78.54
Spacing, S𝑥 = x 1000 = 166.44 mm Hence providing, S = 125 mm c/c
471.87
Providing, T10 @ 125 mm c/c
78.54
Ast−provided = x 1000 = 628.32 mm2
125
Ast 628.32
Pt = = = 0.418 %
bD 1000 x 150

(b) Along longer span (Distribution Reinforcements)

0.12
Ast−min = x 1000 x 150 = 180 mm2
100
Now providing T8 mm, AT = 50.26 mm2
50.26
Spacing, S= x 1000 = 279.22 mm
180
Hence providing, S = 250 mm c/c
Providing, T8 @ 250 mm c/c
Note: Provided spacing, S = 200 mm < 5 d = 5 x 125 = 625 mm or 300 mm hence ok.
Step 04 – Check / Design for shear
Maximum calculated shear force, Vu = 31.556 KN
Vu 31.556 x 103
Nominal Shear Stress (Tv ) , = = = 0.2524
bd 1000 x 125
As per IS 456-2000, Table: 19, provided percentage of reinforcements, Pt = 0.418 %
Pt (%) Tc (MPa)
0.25 0.36
0.418 ?
0.5 0.48

Therefore, critical shear, Tc = 0.4400 MPa
Therefore, Nominal shear, (Tv) = 0.2524 MPa < Critical Shear, (Tc) = 0.3242 MPa
Hence provided slab is safe in shear and hence no need to design and provide shear reinforcements.

Step 05 – Check for deflection

Provided percentage of reinforcements, Pt = 0.418 %
𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑙 𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑 (𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑞 )
Stress in steel (f𝑠 ) , = 0.58 x f𝑦 𝑥
𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑙 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑑(𝐴𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑣 )
471.87
Stress in steel (fs ) , = 0.58 x 500 x = 217.79 MPa

Therefore, ( ) Actual = = 34
d 125

Now, ( ) permissible = 26 x 1.4216 = 36.96

( ) actual > ( ) permissible

Hence slab satisfies the deflection criteria.
