An electronic calculator is a small, portable electronic device used to perform both arithmetic

operations and complex mathematical operations.

The first solid electronic calculator was created in the 1960 s, building on the extensive history of
tools such as the abacus (developed around 2000 BC), and the mechanical calculator (developed in
the 17th century AD). It was developed in parallel with the analogue computers of the day.

In addition to general purpose of calculators, there are those designed for specific markets, for
example, there are scientific calculators which include trigonometric and statistical calculations.
Some calculators even have the ability to do computer algebra. Graphing calculators can be used to
graph functions defined on the real line, or higher dimensional Euclidean space.

A laptop is a kind of computer unit which has the same function as a PC (Personal Computer), but it’s
smaller, lighter and of different sizes. Nowadays, most people choose laptops for several reasons. A
laptop is a portable device. This portability is very helpful for our work, study and other activities.
We do not need complicated cable installations to activate a laptop. With a laptop, we can do our
work anytime and anywhere. Moreover, a laptop allows us to access the internet in public places
which provide free access called hot spot areas. Some people like to use this facility to carry out their
tasks. Finally, a laptop consumes energy more efficiently than a PC does. This device uses a
rechargeable battery as a source of electric energy. So, if we prefer using a laptop, it means that we
support the government program to save energy. That’s why a laptop has become very popular
recently.

From the text we know that ….

A. A laptop is usually more expensive than a PC

B. More people like a laptop better than a PC
C. More people like a PC better than a laptop
D. For a mobile person a laptop is handier than a PC
E. A laptop is cheaper now than it was before

“…a laptop allows us….” The word “allows” has the opposite meaning with …

A. forbids
B. provides
C. permits
D. asks
E. stops

What is the purpose of the text above?

A. To inform the readers about a laptop

B. To describe about a laptop

Glasses—also called eyeglasses (formal), spectacles, or specs (informal)—are frames bearing lenses
worn in front of the eyes, normally for vision correction or eye protection. Safety glasses are kind of
eye protection against flying debris or against visible and near visible light or radiation. Sunglasses
allow better vision in bright daylight, and may protect against damage from high levels of ultraviolet
light. Other types of glasses may be used for viewing visual information (such as stereoscope) or
simply just for aesthetic or fashion values.

Historical types of glasses include the pincers, monocle, lorgnette, and scissors or scissors-glasses.

Modern glasses are typically supported by pads on the bridge of the nose and by temple arms (sides)
placed over the ears. CR-39 lenses are the most common plastic lenses due to their low weight, high
scratch resistance, low dispersion, and low transparency to ultraviolet and infrared radiation.
Polycarbonate and Trivex lenses are the lightest and most shatter-resistant, making them the best
for impact protection.

An unpopular aspect of glasses is their inconvenience. Even through the creation of light frames such
as those made of titanium, very flexible frames and new lens materials and optical coatings, glasses
can still cause problems during rigorous sport, Visibility can be significantly reduced by becoming
greasy, trapping vapor when eating hot food, swimming, walking in rain or rapid temperature
changes (such as walking into a warm building from cold temperature outside). Scraping, fracturing,
or breakage of the lenses require time—consuming and costly professional repair, though modern
plastic lenses are almost indestructible and very scratch—resistant.

At the workshop or repair shops, the mechanic puts on glasses to....

A. Protect against ultraviolet light

B. Avoid sun radiation
C. Protect against debris
D. Make good looking
E. View visual information

What is one good point of CR – 39 lenses?

A. It is not easily scratched
B. It is cheap
C. It is the lightest
D. Infrared cannot get through it
E. Ultraviolet cannot get through it

Remote sensing is the acquisition of information about an object or phenomenon, without making
physical contact with the object. In modern usage, the term generally refers to the use of aerial
sensor technology to detect and classify objects on Earth (both on the surface, and in the
atmosphere and ocean) by means of propagated signals (e.g., electromagnetic radiation emitted
from aircraft or satellites).

There are two main types or remote sensing: passive remote sensing and active remote sensing.
Passive sensors detect natural radiation that is emitted or reflected by the objects or surrounding
area being observed. Reflected sunlight is the most common source of radiation measured by
passive censors. Examples of passive remote sensors include film photography, infra-red, charge-
coupled devices, and radiometers. Active collection, on the other hand, emits energy in order to
scan objects and areas whereupon a sensor then detects and measures the radiation that is
reflected or backscattered from the target. RADAR and LIDAR are examples of active remote sensing
where the time delay between emission and return is measured, stabilizing the location, height,
speed and direction of an object.

From the text we know that remote sensing…

A. Does not difficult to do

B. Is a way to obtain information about an object or phenomenon
C. Does not make use propagated signals
D. Does not make use of censors
E. Makes physical contact with the object

What is the main idea of the second paragraph?

A. Active remote sensing and passive remote sensing are equally useful for the development of
knowledge and technology
B. The source of energy radiated for sensing determines whether it is the active or passive type
C. Passive sensing is not as strong as active sensing
D. The energy in sunlight is important for remote sensing
E. Active sensing is better than passive sensing

Television, or TV, is one of humanity’s most important means of communication. It brings pictures
and sounds from around the world into millions of homes.

People, with a television set in their houses, can sit and watch the president makes a speech or visits
a foreign country. They can see a war being fought. Through television, viewers at home can see and
learn about people, places, and things in a away lands.

Additionally, television brings its viewers a steady stream of programs that are designed to
entertain. In fact, TV provides many more entertainment programs than any other kind of
information media. The programs include action-packed dramas, light comedies, soap operas, sports
events, cartoons, quizzes, variety shows and motion pictures.
“Television, or TV, is one of humanity’s most important means of communication.” What does the
sentence mean?

A. Having television means we are rich people

B. Television can bring pictures and information from the world into homes
C. We can communicate with our family through television

Yesterday

Yesterday,
All my troubles seemed so far away,
Now it looks as though they're here to stay,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Suddenly,
I'm not half the man I used to be,
There's a shadow hanging over me,
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.

Why she
Had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say.
I said,
Something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

Yesterday,
Love was such an easy game to play,
Now I need a place to hide away,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Dying Planet

Is anyone out there?

Does anybody listen or care anymore?
We are living on a dying planet,
We’re killing everything that’s alive,
And anyone who tries to deny it
Wears a tie

And gets paid to lie

So I wrote these songs for a dying planet,
I’m sorry but I’m telling the truth,
And for everybody trying to save it
These songs are for you, too.
Is anyone out there?

Rain and Tears

Rain and tears all the same

But in the sun you’ve to play the game
When you cry in winter time
You can’t pretend, it’s nothing but the rain
How many times I’ve seen
Tears coming from your blue eyes
Rain and tears all the same
But in the sun you’ve got to play the game
Give an answer of love I need an answer of love
Rain and tears in the sun
But in your heart you feel the rain the waves
Rain and tears both for shown
For in my heart there’ll never be a sun
Rain and tears all the same
But in the sun you’ve play the game

Outdoors
Song by: Jason Mraz

All day I’ve been inside

And I’ve got the feeling
I’m trapped between the walls
And underneath the ceiling
I feel a bit off track
And I’m trying to get back
Back in the cool, cool air where the sun is shinning
Nothing’s going to stop me
It’s all in the timing
It’s finally again my turn
It’s time to return
‘Cause I won’t stay inside no more
No more
I can’t wait to go
Outdoors
Well open up your door and be like me
Open up your door and then breathe free
And look at all the beauty you’ll feel
Loved, loved, loved, loved
Listen to the music of the wind and the brides sing
We’re just one big family
And all of nature deserves to be
Loved, loved, loved, loved,
Loved

So, I won’t stay inside no more

No more
It can’t wait, I’m sure
There’s need to run and hide
Let’s go explore
It feels so great let’s go outdoors
(Don’t cha do)
Everyone come on
come on out there
where the air is fresh and clear

So, I won’t stay inside no more

No more
It cannot wait
Let’s go out doors
Well, open up your door and be like me
Open up your door and then breathe free

And look at all the beauty and you’ll find

The earth and the sky is yours

So please go, there’s no need,

There’s no need to hide inside
Let’s go explore
This will, this will feel so great
Let’s go outdoors

Happiness
Oh happiness is two kinds of ice cream
Finding your skate key, telling the time

And happiness is learning to whistle

Tying your shoe for the very first time

Happiness is playing the drum in your own school band

And happiness is walking hand in hand

And happiness is five different crayons

Knowing a secret, climbing a tree

Happiness is finding a nickel

Catching a firefly, setting it free

And happiness is being alone every now and then

And happiness is coming home again

The Electric Torch

A flash light or an electric torch is a hand-held, portable, electrically-powered light source.

It is commonly used for finding keyholes, supplementing dark-adapted vision, or helping you find
your way when walking in the dark.

The electric torch was invented in 1902 by Conrad Hubbert, who was also known as Akiba Horowitz.

A typical flash light consists of a light bulb mounted in a reflector with a transparent cover to protect
the light source and reflector, a battery and a switch. These are supported and protected by a plastic
case.

The central part of a torch is the battery. The bottom of the bulb rests on the positive terminal of the
battery. The zinc case of the battery forms the negative terminal. The negative terminal of the
battery is connected to the switch by a brass strip. Another brass strip runs from the switch to the
metal case of the bulb.
The bulb contains a very thin wire called a filament. The filament, made of a tungsten alloy, is
enclosed in a vacuum. The filament rests on two glass columns. Two wires pass through the columns
and the whole assembly is enclosed in a thin glass envelope.
