TRY THIS!
1. WHAT IS LITERARY ADAPTION?
Literary adaptation is the adapting of a literary source (e.g., a
novel, short story, play, poem) to another genre or medium, such
as music, a stage play, a ballet, an opera, a film, or even an
animation.

2. Why literary works are usually adapted into films and

other sorts?
All these types of adaptations required the involvement of a specific type of
writer. -If a novel or a short story is adapted for the stage, it needs to be rewritten
as a play. (Requiring a playwright) -If a play is rewritten as a story, it takes the
shape of a novel or a short story. (Then, it calls upon a writer.) -If a text is adapted
to an opera (operetta or musical), it is to be rewritten as a libretto. (This
necessitates a librettist.) -If an original work is adapted to film, then it is reworked
as a scenario (by a screenwriter.)

3. Identify at least one film that you know that is adapted from a novel,
or a shorty story, or a literary masterpiece. What did you notice upon
watching the film and reading its literary text? Do they have similarities
or changes have been made? Why?

For me, Romeo and Juliet. But when they made the novel a film, there
were few changes of the story. One is with happy ending and some of
them are not happy ending. Not only that but they have also similarities
which is the settings , characters and roles. Screenwriters changes the
plot because Sometimes real world events can make the subject of a
movie seem inappropriate, and as such they are edited out of final cut to
avoid controversy.

Guide questions:
1. Are there similarities of the story from literary text to the
film? Cite some points.
Similarities are the settings, the names and plot.

2. Are there changes of the story from literary text to the film? Do
you think this/these change(s) create(s) the story to become better
or worse?
I think it became better because when we read it
from the literary text we could just imagine
sometimes we could not understand the situation or
scene. But when it created to a film. It made the
readers more inspired and amazed because all day
have to do is to watch it.
3. Aside from the story, what are the strengths and weaknesses of the film?
The strenghths is the story has a wonderful
adventurous plot. The plot is that of an adventurous
journey by dwarves and their friend and the hobbot
encounter several obstacles. The only weakness I
could support would be that the book is not really
age appropriate. Although the story is based upon
fantasy and magic.
