TOPIC LESSON 8 – PIDGINS AND CREOLES

LESSON 8 – PIDGINS AND CREOLES

OBJECTIVES:
In this lesson, we were able to:

1. Develop a clear understanding about standard language, pidgins and creoles.

2. Describe how a creole develops from a pidgin.
3. Know the specific criteria needed for a language variety to be considered standard.

STANDARD LANGUAGE
- A standard language is a variety of language that is used by governments, in the media, in schools and for
international communication. There are different standard varieties of English in the world, such as North
American English, Australian English and Indian English.

PIDGINS
- It is a first-generation language rooted in a multicultural environment in which humans had integrated to
effectively communicate with one another.

Example of English Pidgins:

Nigerian Pidgin English

Chinese Pidgin English
Hawaiian Pidgin English
Queensland Kanaka English
and Bislama (one of the official languages of the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu).

CREOLES
- is a stable natural language that develops from the process of different languages simplifying and mixing into
a new form, and then that form expanding and elaborating into a full-fledged language with native speakers, all
within a fairly brief period of time.

Example:
Chavacano Language in Zamboanga City

Examples:

TAGALOG ENGLISH CHAVACANO

aalisin - will remove Di quita

abakada - the Tagalog alphabet Tagalug alpabet

abaniko - a native fan pamaypay

Ale - woman senyora

labi - lip labyu

lalawigan - province probinsya

nasugatan - wounded ya herida

oo nga - yes (said with approval) Sige ya

CHAVACANO PHRASES

What's your name? - Cosa tu nombre?

Leave me alone! - No istorba cunmigo!
Good luck! - Buen suerte

CRITERIA NEEDED FOR A LANGUAGE VARIETY TO BE CONSIDERED STANDARD

- A language should be standardized to get its formality. The processes of language standardization are:
selection, codification, elaboration of function, and acceptance.
