Stat 201 Assignment 2 - P a g e 1 Summer 2023

Question 1:
An insurance policy pays an individual 100 per day for up to 3 days of hospitalization and 25 per
day for each day after that. The number of days of hospitalization, 𝑋, is a discrete random variable
with the following probability function
6−𝑘
𝑃(𝑋 = 𝑘) = 5 for 𝑘 = 1,2,3,4,5.
a) Determine the possible values of the payment for hospitalization under this policy.
b) Calculate the expected payment for hospitalization under this policy.

Question 2:
The element titanium has five stable occurring isotopes, differing from each other in the number of
neutrons an atom contains. If 𝑋 is the number of neutrons in a randomly chosen titanium atom, the
probability mass function of 𝑋 is given as follows:

𝑥 24 25 26 27 28
𝑃(𝑋 = 𝑥) 0.0825 k 0.7372 0.0541 0.0518
a) Find k.
b) Determine the expected number of neutrons in a randomly chosen atom.

Question 3:
Given that X has the following moment-generating function
1 1 1
𝑚𝑋 (𝑡) = 𝑒 −2𝑡 + 𝑘𝑒 −𝑡 + 𝑒 𝑡 + 𝑒 2𝑡
6 4 4
a) Find k.
b) Find the expected value of X.
c) Find the probability 𝑃(|𝑋| ≤ 1).

Question 4:
A television store owner figures that 50 percent of the customers entering his store will purchase
an ordinary television, 20 percent will buy a 3D television, and 30 percent will just be browsing. If
ten customers enter his store on a particular day, find the probabilities of the following events:
a) two customers purchase 3D sets;
b) one customer purchases an ordinary set;
c) two customers purchase nothing.

Question 5:
The firm's employees who manufacture insulation are being tested for indications of asbestos in
their lungs. The firm is requested to send three employees with positive symptoms of asbestos to a
medical center for further testing. If 40% of the employees have positive indications of asbestos in
their lungs
a) Find the probability that ten employees must be tested to find three positives.
b) If each test costs $20, find the expected value and variance of the total cost of conducting
the tests to locate three positives.

Question 6:
There are 30 restaurants in a particular town. Assume that four of them have health code
violations. A health inspector chooses ten restaurants at random to visit. Find probabilities
a) that two of the restaurants with health code violations will be visited.
b) that none of the visited restaurants will violate the health code.

Question 7:
The probability that a computer running a particular operating system crashes on any given day is
0.1.
a) Find the probability that the computer crashes for the first time on the 14th day after
installing the operating system.
b) Find the probability that the computer crashes for the third time on the 34th day after the
operating system is installed.
c) Find the probability that the computer crashes 3 times in the first 34 days after installing
the operating system.

Question 8:
Particles are registered by a counter at an average rate of 𝜆 particles per second, and this number is
distributed following the Poisson distribution. It is known that registering two particles is twice the
probability of registering three particles.
a) Find the value of 𝜆.
b) Find the probability that at most two particles are registered in a given second.
c) Find the probability that at least three particles are registered in two seconds.

Question 9:
An insurance company has a portfolio of car insurance. For a given period, it is assumed that the
drivers are classified into two categories: good drivers (g) and bad drivers b. The proportion of
good drivers is 75% of the total drivers. We also know that the number of claims for each driver
follows Poisson with parameter 𝜆𝑖 for 𝑖 = 𝑏, 𝑔, where 𝜆𝑏 = 4 and 𝜆𝑔 = 1.
a) Find the probability that a randomly selected driver had no accident.
b) Given that a driver had no accident, what is the probability of being a good driver?

Question 10:
It is known that 35% of university students take the bus to school. We interview students in this
university and ask the following question: Do you take the bus to the university?
a) If five students are randomly interviewed, what is the probability that exactly two will
answer no to the question?
b) What is the probability that the fifth student interviewed is the second to answer yes to the
question?
c) What is the expected number of interviews to perform to get the first' No'?

Question 11:
Consider a random variable 𝑋 with the following moment-generating function
1
𝑚𝑋 (𝑡) = (1 + 𝑒 3𝑡 )
8

a) Find the probability function of 𝑋

b) Find the expected value and the variance of 10 − 2𝑋.
