FITTINGS

• KNOCK DOWN FITTINGS- Knock-down fittings are those that can be put together easily, normally using
only a screw driver, a drill, a mallet/hammer and other basic tools.

-knock down fittings are a modern way of joining materials quickly and easily without the use of clamps
and glue.

WHY ARE KNOCK DOWN FITTINGS ARE USED?

• Knock-down fittings provide simple construction techniques for difficult materials such as
particleboard.

• Knock-down fittings allow for products such as wardrobes and kitchen units to be sold as flat packs and
assembled at home.

• Flat packs allow for easier transport and storage of what are bulky goods.

TYPES OF KNOCK DOWN FITTINGS

1) TWO BLOCK FITTING (LOC JOINT)

- These are made from plastic. A bolt passes through the first fitting into the thread of thesecond. As the
bolt is tightened it draws the two fittings together.

2) RIGID JOINT

- These are normally moulded in plastic which makesthem strong. Screws pass through the four
holeswhich hold the sides at each corner firmly together.

3) CAM LOCKS

- The disk fits into a recess in the first side of the cabinet. It rotates by inserting a screwdriver into the
slot in its side. The shaft is screwed into the second side of the cabinet.

4) SCAN FITTING

- These are strong enough to be either permanent or temporary joints. The cylinder is inserted into the
first side of a cabinet in a pre-drilled hole. The screw is then pushed through the hole in the second side
until it meets the cylinder.

5) CONNECTOR BOLT

- These fasteners have a 6mm thread system and dress up many furniture pieces. These bolts areideal
for use when joining two pieces together and as the bolt head will be visible they have brass or anodized
finish.

6) PLASTIC CORNER BLOCK (FIXIT BLOCK)

- The corner block is pressed against the two pieces of material (normally wood based). Screws are used
to fix the block intoposition.

7) TIMBER FITTING (SQUARE SECTION CLEAT)

- A piece of material such as pine can be drilled and screws can bepassed through these holes. This gives
a cheap and effectiveknock-down joint. The screws are normally countersunk into the knock-down
fitting.

8) BED FITTING

- are used to join bed rails to bed legs. The two parts pull tighter together asweight is applied to the bed
frame.
