Social Relationships in Middle and Late Adolescence

Social Influence – is the influence of the society that results in a behavior or attitude modification of an
individual. It happens when one’s emotions, opinions, or behaviors are affected by others.

Three Forms of Social Influence

1. Conformity
- An individual is influenced to adjust or change his/her behavior, attitudes, feelings, and/or
beliefs in order to “fit in” or to “belong” to a group
- Regarded as a passive form of influence
2. Compliance
- The person does what the other explicitly or implicitly asks him/her to do, though he/she
remains to have an option whether or not to comply
- Referred to as an active form of social influence
3. Obedience
- Involves abiding by the direct orders of someone who is regarded as an authority figure
- The person obeying the mandates of the other seems to have no choice but to obey

Group Leadership – is “the process of providing focus and direction to a specific group of people” (What
is Group Leadership, n.d.).

Followership – is the function of the members in a group or organization and regarded as the
counterpart of leadership.

Various Roles of Individuals in the Society

1. President/Political Leaders – the president of the country is the highest political leader in the
executive branch who has roles such as commander-in-chief, chief of state, and foremost
diplomat.
2. Religious leaders – they are performers of rites and ceremonies in their respective religion.
3. Teachers – they are the dispensers of knowledge and useful information.
4. Children – they have the role and societal duty to grow to be healthy, competent, responsible,
and productive individuals.
5. Church members – they follow the religious leaders and adhere to teachings of their religion.
6. Celebrities – their influence on other people is great especially on the young generation.

Objective evaluation – (of ourselves) is important to have a more or less accurate view of the kind of
personality we have.

Filipino Values in Social Relationships

1. Fear of losing face or ‘hiya’ – his involves being afraid to do bad things as it may damage one’s
reputation in the eyesight of other people.
2. Pakikisama – commonly regarded as ‘good public relations’. This is usually being practiced to
avoid clash with other people or a certain group.
3. Hospitality – refers to the innate ability and trait of Filipinos to be courteous and entertaining
guests.
4. Amor propio or self-esteem – comes from the person’s tendency to protect his or her dignity
and honor.
5. Respect to elders – the use of ‘po’ and ‘opo’ when talking to elders and ‘pagmamano’.
6. Utag na loob (debt of gratitude) – involves the concept ‘reciprocity’ or returning the received
favor.
